I don't think ankle boots are a passing trend - just wearing them with the top exposed is. wearing them under jeans is always possible and not trendy. the style of ankle boots you are looking for depends on how you want to wear them.

these boots are made for tights and a skirt, leggings or skinny jeans. also if you are not stick thin, they don't taper your foot down too much, which some of the more delicate pointier ones do by emphasizing the weight of the hips. I also like these because they echo the chloe hardware/look:
