mine are quite nice and only 5 years old, but they just aren't working for me anymore and i'm thinking of painting them or refinishing them somehow. has anyone ever done it or is it just some crazy idea i'm getting from watching too much HGTV at 1am?

just wondering what condition your cabinets were in before and what the results were?

This made me laugh cause I can't tell you how many times I've watched HGTV that late and got some hair brain decorating idea, hehe   But most of them have turned out to be good ideas, maybe that's when we do some of most creative thinking

Anyway, I've never painted cabinets but am curious about that as well because I'm wanting to paint my bathroom cabinets.

i have done it.

we sanded them a bit first to rough them up and then primed them, painted them and put new hardware on.

it is a big job but very doable.

we were happy with the results.

I did - my parents entire kitchen worth, actually.

Their house was built in the 70's and had those dark-ish brown flat panel cabs w/out hardware of any kind.

We washed, sanded (lightly), primed, painted (creamy white), sealed, and added hardware throughout.  I would recommend sanding after the coat of primer and the first coat of paint to knock down any texture left by the brush/roller.
