has anyone here tried to dye clothing?
Permalink Closed

I've tried a couple times, and it's never really come out very well. I bought a light sweater today that I love the style of, but not the color. It's a dusty rose color that just doesn't make me look my best. I was wondering if anyone had any brand/technique recs for clothing dye, because I do want to keep this, I just need it to be darker!

I have never died anything from a light to a dark color.  I've only redyed my black clothes- um black   I think the most populare dye brand is Rit, but I may be wrong.  Be sure to use salt in the process.  Also I've heard of a commercial product you can use to set the dye, but I've never used it. I think it's called Retayne.  Here is some info I pulled from the Rit site.

5 Easy Steps to Successful Dyeing

1

Select a Fabric

2
Pretreat fabric. Wash fabric to remove finishes and stains. Use Rit Color Remover to lighten the original fabric color as much as possible before dyeing to a lighter or different color.

3
Prepare dye solution. Dissolve Rit powder dye thoroughly in hot water (1 pint water per package). For every pound of dry fabric (about 3 yards), use 1 package powder dye or 1/2 bottle liquid dye. Double the amount of dye for medium, bright or dark colors. For best result when dyeing cotton, rayon, linen, ramie or blends of these, add 1 cup salt to dyebath.

4
Choose a dyeing technique.

  • For maximum convenience, and for large items, use the washing machine technique.
  • Use the stovetop technique for best color results when dyeing with Rit Black Dye or other dark colors.
  • The sink or bucket technique is suitable for dyeing small or delicate items to a light or medium shade.
  • If you are just touching up a lightened area in fabric, the spot method may be best.

5
Care for your garment. Wash dyed items separately in cool
