vera wang for kohl's

This is from the Wall Street JOurnal and Reuters. Neither articles had images or price points.

Kohl's Corp. said
Thursday it would carry a line of clothing and handbags by Vera
Wang, the designer known for her high-end wedding gowns, in the
latest move by a large department store chain to carry fashion
celebrity merchandise.

The new line, which will be introduced at Kohl's more than 749 stores in fall 2007, will be called "Very Vera by Vera Wang" and will include moderately priced clothing, bras and underwear, handbags, jewelry, shoes, bedding and bath products.

"I felt it was really time for us to be able to develop more of an iconic brand to reach America," says the 57-year-old designer, whose closely held Vera Wang Group has about 300 employees. Despite high consumer awareness of her name, "it has sometimes been a bit frustrating for me because we are very, very expensive," she said. The company is branching into other areas so people can own her merchandise "without having to pay $4,000 to $12,000 for an evening gown or a wedding dress, or $3,000 for a couture jacket."

"very vera by vera wang"

could there be any more alliteration?

Well, I don't see Vera at Kohls, but then I was shocked when Behnaz Saraphour (sp? ) was going to do Target and so far seems to have something very close to her usual aesthetic going. I remain optimistic.

I will say that Vera (or her publicity people) make it sound like all she makes is super-expensive haute couture. What about those lovely mid-range bridesmaid gowns and such?

Yeah, so far I've been disappointed with every "designer" line in lower end stores. It's like the high end designers think they can pass off terrible fabric & shitty quality to us "low enders" - I'm just not impressed. So I'll wait to pass judgement until it's in the store.

I have yet to be impressed with top designers doing the discount store thing.  The style is usually a bit off and the materials/quality is less than admirable.  Very Vera sounds a bit cheesy too.

There's also her mattress line

Vera Wang and Serta are a perfect match of comfort and style," said Bob Sherman, president of Serta. "Together we are ushering in a whole new era of mattress elegance and comfort for American women—one that is uniquely Vera Wang."

now that's just weird.

I might take a peek at the Vera Vera stuff, but I don't know how excited I can get about it - and at Kohl's? I don't know. Maybe they're trying for what Target is doing, but Kohl's seems kind of like too bland and personality-less of a store to pull off something like this.

I think Chanel for Walmart would be fantastic.

Anyways I just feel as if Vera sold out.  One thing to do a line of clothes or a line of bedware but to do matresses too?

eh...i agree that Kohl's seems too bland for this sort of thing, but obviously the high-end collection for the low-end store is a lucrative concept right now.

i still don't get the mattresses though.  i mean...it's a mattress.  it makes no sense.

anyway...got this further info on pricing and such from WWD:

Mansell [president of Kohl's] explained that Kohl's apparel strategy revolves around a good-better-best merchandising plan that focuses on different fashion profiles. The Very Vera lines will be designed to reach the uppermost segment of Kohl's modern women's offerings.

Currently, the highest priced "classic" women's line at the department store — and the biggest launch in its history — is Chaps. Retail prices range from $49.50 to $69.50 for sweaters, pants and skirts and $79.50 to $119.50 for jackets. Mansell said retail prices for Very Vera haven't been set yet, but they will be higher.

"The way we see each brand developing, it's a step up, not a leap," said Mansell.

"We see it as our premier brand that focuses on a modern sense of style," he added. "Vera's got a great fashion sense and a point of view that reaches people. We'll rely on her to guide us."

The article also said, well here, I'll just paste it in...

The deal ends a nearly two-year period during which Wang was wooed by several suitors, including Jones Apparel Group, Liz Claiborne Inc. and even St. John for assorted deals ranging, respectively, from a better sportswear line to an outright acquisition to becoming creative director.
