Ground Red Pepper vs. Cayenne Pepper
Permalink Closed

Are these the same thing?  I just bought a tiny shaker of Cayenne Pepper for $5 last night and I'm trying to make another recipe today that calls for Ground Red Pepper.

Should I be fine w/the Cayenne Pepper?  I really don't want to drop another $5 for 2 ounces of pepper I will seldom use.

TIA!

Should work fine - the flavor might be ever so slightly different, but it's probably just the heat that you're after anyway .

Not the same but you should be ok like elle stated.  cayenne peppers are smaller red-orange peppers and tend to be hotter than red bell peppers which is where the red pepper crushed/ground comes from IIRC.  You'll get the same effect so no need to worry.
