it may depend on what brand it is, but i know my dad has a kit that came with his rowenta...so when mine gets dirty i just bring my iron to his house!

here's some ideas from ehow.com:  (http://www.ehow.com/how_18787_clean-starch-residue.html)

How to Clean Starch Residue from the Bottom of an Iron

Your shirts may be perfectly starched, but your iron is worse for the wear, as you can see by the caked-on spray starch all over the sole plate. Here's a gentle way to clean that iron!

Steps:

1.
Unplug the iron and make sure it is cool to the touch.

2.
Mix a thick paste out of 2 tbsp. baking soda and a bit of water.

3.
Dip a clean rag into the mixture and scrub the iron's sole plate until the caked-on spray starch loosens and wipes away. You may need to use some elbow grease.

4.
Wipe the sole plate clean with a second clean, wet rag.

To clean a iron by eHow Friend
I used household wax while the iron is warm. It's a little messy because of the melting wax, but it leaves your iron nice and smooth. I clean the iron after using starch.

Turn on iron to medium setting and now use Oxi Clean versatile stain remover. Wet a dishwashing sponge and dip in the Oxi Clean. Now scrub the bottom of the iron lightly and the stains with begin to disappear. Good luck, hope this helps.

I turn my iron on & wet a towel - then I iron on the wet towel. I do this everytime I use my iron & it never gets build up. You could try it on your iron & see if it works.

My iron came with instructions on how to clean it , if you still have the booklet, I would look at that.
