"Smart Casual" Outfits Challenge

I hate those two words together.

I am heading to compete in the elephant polo tournament in Thailand in 2 weeks, and several of the events are smart casual (along with several black tie and cocktail team parties). I've got the black tie and cocktail part covered...now, I have to find something smart casual.

I always seem to end up doing business casual, but since you guys are so good at this, I would love to have your help.

It's mostly very wealthy British ex-pats or Brits who are going to be there, so I'd like to make a good impression, especially since we will probably see them again in Nepal and India.

I'm shopping for clothes for my trip now. I have two weeks to find stuff that travels well and will withstand the Thai heat and crazy elephant polo players. I don't want to break the bank, either, but I do have a bit of money to work with. I need to have at least 3 "smart casual" outfits, and if I can mix and match, that would be great because it would mean less things to pack.

Any suggestions for outfits would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I really love girls who can pull off straight jeans (not necessarily skinny jeans, but not flare), with cute flats and a lacey blouse. Extra points for pulling your hair back into a slick bun with a black ribbon

is that even "smart casual?" I'm not sure

When I hear 'smart casual', I automatically think 'J.Crew'.  Not that everything needs to be from JCrew, but their style, ya know?

When you say 'withstand crazy polo players' what do you mean, exactly?  Can you wear skirts or would that be a no-no?

It's a LOT of drinking and carousing, so I don't know if I want to wear a skirt in that environment.

Ok, i don't want to hijack your post, but I am COMPLETELY intrigued with the idea of Elephant Polo/ Britsh Ex-Pats etc..what exactly is elephant polo? Just normal polo but on elephants?

Hmm...

How about something like this and maybe a thin sweater on top? I know how warm it can be in that area of the world so you can probably substitute with much lighter-weight clothing. Great looking slacks would work too.

OH MY GOSH I had no idea that "elephant polo" was actually that - polo on elephants? I watched the video on the washington post site, and it is my new favorite thing. How did you get into that? I've never even heard of it!!!
