I have a couple pairs that are just a little too tight, and I've heard that shoe repair places can stretch shoes up to half a size bigger--has anyone done this? Does it only work on certain kinds of shoes?
I tried it last year with the Miss SIxty Dance boots. One of my calves was a little too big to get the boot up all the way so I had my shoe guy try and stretch the leather in that area. It didn't work, they fit exactly the same as before after being on that stretch machine for over a week!
I think that even if a shoe is leather, if the lining is man-made it will be much less likely to stretch. However, if the shoe has a leather lining, it should give a little (though not half a size) on its own.
I got my Frye Bari boots stretched in the calf 1/2 an inch and it worked like a charm, but that was unlined suede.
I have had shoes stretched. They only stretch in width though. However, the cobbler told me that because people's feet are shaped differently and must be put in a standard size the shoes are often long enough and all you need a is a little extra width to make the work right. So my shoes were half a size smaller than what I normally wear and I had them stretched and they fit perfectly. It did take two tries though.

Stretching will do *nothing* for changing the length. It only works to widen the shoe slightly (I used to sell shoes for a living, way back in the day). And of course that will only work on leather shoes, not anything manmade.
