Permalink Closed

hey i have an interview in LA with an entertainment company...this is so huge for me.  i need to dress semi-professional, but trendy.  do you girls have any ideas?

also, i have that black, short sleeve, MJ button down dress that ties in the back, is that too casual?

TIA :)

I would still wear a suit (always appropriate IMO) but with one of those Bebe silk button downs underneath. And great shoes of course! Good luck!

I have worked in the entertainment industry in Los Angeles since 2002.

I would wear a pantsuit with a modern cut (no J. Crew or Banana...IME they're too frumpy and/or plain) in black. I am very much a black or grey person on interviews. I don't like skirt suits because they seem too professional for their own good.

These places will have the kind of thing you're looking for

  • some Theory (only those with smaller, almost corpped jackets)

  • some Club Monaco

  • BCBG

  • French Connection (sometimes)

  • Nanette Lepore

  • some Express (but IMO they can look cheapish)

I've worn all sorts of tops underneath...some ideas include.

  • silk button down (like Bebe, but one with sleeves...see below)

  • short sleeve cashmere sweater

  • printed blouse

Also, I wore a knockoff of the James Perse off the shoulder top under my suit jacket, took off the suit jacket since the interviewer was wearing jeans, to an interview and got an offer.

Definitely wear something with sleeves underneath in the event that the suit jacket screams "too professional" since so many offices (even at the major studios) are casual. Then you can take the jacket off and carry it with you.

Bags...if you have a trendyish large structured bag then carry it (like a Botkier Bianca would be totally appropriate)
