And if anyone steals it, I'm pointing to ST to prove I had the idea first. I think I'm really going to do this one. I have a friend who can help me shop it around and another friend who is a photographer, so I'm set.
Here's the title: I Look Horrible in This!
What it is: a collection of "fashionable" and "trendy" items worn on everyday people and the hideousness that ensues.
How it came about: I was at Nordies this weekend trying on a shirt I'd posted about last week. I tried on a size L, although I should have worn a size M but I wanted it to fit easily over my bum since it was a fairly long shirt. It was sheer, blue, lacy, and HORRIBLE!! I honestly could not believe something could be created that looked that terrible on me. Don't get me wrong, I'm no Betty or anything and I've had my fair share of clothes that don't look good on me but seriously - that horrid? It's practically impossible to imagine that particular shirt looking good on anyone. So that got me thinking. This was the 2nd time this summer I've tried on something "trendy" (the other time being long shorts - I still shudder at the thought) and been absolutely terrified and appalled when I looked in the mirror. I thought to myself, "I should really carry around my digicam so I can record this and all my friends and I can laugh at this over drinks." The thought evolved and hence, the book.
Each page/section would contain: a) a runway look that embodied the current style along with some form of commentary (i.e. Ah, long shorts create a new silouhette, very Audrey Hepburn meets modern woman); b) a picture of the everyday girl model (one of my friends) finding something similar in a store - the stores will vary from mall stores to higher end stores to Old Navy - looking extremely pleased and excited to be trying on the new style; and c) a picture of the everyday girl model looking really sad because she looks completely horrid in her new find and some commentary there too (i.e. long and lean turned to short and stumpy, all in one fatal blow of over-exposure of knobby knees and pale calves).
I need some ideas for some fashions/trends that don't work for at least a decent percentage of average, everyday girls (and maybe guys - I haven't thought that far yet).
Here are some current thoughts:
skinny jeans
long shorts
tunic shirts that go over hips
leggings
ankle boots
dresses over pants
Nicole Richie big sunglasses
puffy skirts (non A-line and pencil skirts)
Now, keep in mind that all of these things look good on some people. I'm just trying to pick things that don't look good on a lot of people (i.e. skinny jeans look bad on girls with curves, puffy skirts add weight to thinner girls, etc.).
Any other ideas? I'm open to anything and I welcome the comments. TIA!
I think it would be really cool if it was through the ages...you know like a series for each year. I Look Horrible In This 2006, 2007, so on and so forth. Then when fashion came back, you could point out that it looked horrible the first time too.
love the idea and love lilykind's suggestion of doing it by decade- because then it becomes sort of timeless- a reminder of trends to avoid when they come back!
I did my own little version of that last night when I tried on skinny jeans at Target, just to prove to myself they would look horrible on me. I had to take a pic with my phone to show my mom how bad it looked on me.
