So, I've been looking at the fall previews in the mags, and starting to prep my very frugal fall shopping list, and I'm having a really hard time because I feel like there's a huge change this fall and a lot of items that have been "basics" for me will need to be retired or pared back. I think that the overall ... silhouette? ... is really different. For example, skinny jeans and leggings, sweater tops/dresses and just fuller tops in general, chunkier heels, bubble skirts, round-toed shoes, etc. I also feel like I have to add some polish with more "dressy" tops and layering, rather than layering tees and tanks. I'm not very good at explaining this, but hopefully it makes sense.
Anyway, I know I can still wear my straight-leg jeans and stilettos and pointy-toes, but I feel like a major update to my wardrobe is needed to add in these other items and that I need to think way differently about how I put things together. Is anyone else feeling this way?

i have been feeling this too. i will not be doing the skinny jean, legging, mini skirt, or bubble skirts because i really don't dig on those looks. i do like the full skirt, and allthough that look did not last long, i do intend to keep wearing it. i do like round toe shoes, but i will never give up the pointy toe. i don't think i am ready to give up the looks that have been in lately. and i will definately not be giving up wide leg or flare jeans/pants.
I am just going to follow my own rules, because there isn't much out there that will look good on my body type. The trends lately are so "trendy" and hard for everyone to pull off that I will be sticking with my classic looks. I am all for adding a fun belt and some round toe shoes but that is it for me.
Well...not really. I try to buy things that fit my body and my lifestyle, instead of things that are deemed "in" at any current time. So the only silhouette I'm really concerned about is my own. :)
I love the idea of new fall items, especially, because fall is my favorite season. And I am planning on getting some boots, and some sweaters this year - especially cardis - but I'm don't have anything on my list that really fits the "look" of this particular season.

I have a feeling that the silhouettes you mentioned and some of the really trendy stuff - bubble skirts and leggings, won't be around for very long. I wouldn't recommend completely overhauling your entire wardrobe.
However, i do think layering with more structured, detailed pieces is a classic/rich look and would be worth the investment.
Don't worry, I feel the same way. But I will NEVER EVER wear a chunky shoe, I don't care how much anyone says they are in style. Rond toes are one thing, but I keep seeing all these boots with big fat chunky heels and I don't get why they are in style along with skinny jeans, those two would do nothing for eachother. NO NO NO.

Well, I'm definitely not saying I'm going to completely throw out my clothes and forget about what looks good on my body and totally wear trendy things. That would be silly. I'm just saying that I think there's a really different look going on and that if I want to look current and modern (which I do) I'm going to need to make more major changes this fall than I have in about two years.

I think the silhouettes are terrible and no matter how many times I go into the fitting room with optimism that something I like on the models just might work...yeah I still look horrid.
This season is going to be about nabbing a few richer investment pieces for me. I'm going to buy durable classics (flat boots, nice bag, leather jacket, cool jewelry) that I'll be able to wear proudly for the next ten years or so. I want to look current, but if current means I'm going to look like I stuck a tire around my hips, then I'm going to pass.
As far as the chunky heels go, if said boots is not a pair of Fryes, forget it.
I only have a problem with bulky tunic-style tops that make me look completely shapeless. I have no intention to try to wear leggings or skinny jeans so I don't really pay attention to that trend. But I have always loved round-toe shoes so I'm glad there are tons of them around to choose from.

I tried on some skinny jeans for the first time today, knowing I would look ridiculous, and I did look ridiculous. I have hips, booty, and thighs, and skinny jeans just aren't flattering.
One thing I am doing is round-toe boots. Even though there's nothing new about round-toe boots, I've never worn them. Right now I feel they look more modern than pointy-toe boots. Of course I'll still be wearing my pointy toes, but when I feel like being more "trendy" I'll wear round toes.

I know what you mean. I get really frustrated when silhouettes change; it kind of blows my mind that clothes can change the appearance of my shape so much, and that trends actually are concerned with silhouettes. I don't know, I just feel like that's such a personal thing that I can't believe there are actually trends for it. I don't think I'm making much sense here. But I'm not really loving anything that I see in magazines lately, no.

i understand what you're getting at. i agree that the silhoutte is definitely different. i think in the past couple of seasons there's been a lot of emphasis on a really ladylike and/or glamourous styles. past trends that come to mind are sequins, tweeds, camis, for some reason a lot of the trends from last season are escaping me.
anyway i think the lines this season are much cleaner and a lot of the fussy details from the past seasons have been replaced by an emphasis on shapes & proportion (i.e. skinny bottom/volume on top).
as far as what that means for my wardrobe, like you i'm on a limited budget this seaosn so i have to be more strategic in what i buy. i've always been a piece specific shopper, and am working on making a spreadsheet of stuff i want.
i also think there are tons of ways to modernize your look without dramatically revampting your style. for example patent leather is huge right now, and a pair of patent leather pumps pointy toe pumps would be a great addition to your wardrobe.
anyway i'm digressing, but i hope i kind of answered your question.
