African American hair question

I'm in a Big Sister/Little Sister program with a now almost 14 yo. She has really fragile hair that keeps breaking off so short and uneven. Anyone have any suggestions for any type of products that might help protect her hair so it can grow out some?

Are you sure that's not malnutrition? Otherwise, she should definitely cut it short and keep it conditioned. Also, is she pulling it into tight braids? That's a cute look, but VERY hard on the hair.

my best friend is african american and she used this stuff in her hair called main and tail.  i am pretty sure it is horse shampoo, but she has used it since we were in the third grade and swears by it.  also she used this stuff that is in a little glass jar.  it is a light blue almost clear color and it is a pomade like stuff and she rubs a little through her hair every day.  i can't remember what it is called so when i talk to her, i will find out and post againl.

Tashina - so should I stop by Eckerds on my way home and ask for the horse shampoo or the stuff in the little glass jar? I think those are stocked by the thiningmybobs and the doodads...

Seriously, let me know what you find out!

sorry, i know, i do that a lot.  but the shampoo and conditioner is called Mane N Tail, and apparently she doesn't use the blue stuff anymore, now she uses this. and i must say, it smells pretty damn good if it is what i am smelling in her hair all the time lately.

is her hair relaxed? chemical relaxers are very tough on hair.

i would say the most important is moisturizing, but protein would also be helpful for her hair. (they make protein treatments...there are inexpensive protein moisture packs at sally's that are really nice) i would recommend doing a treatment like this once a week, or however often she washes her hair...

I'm no hair expert..Erin has that on lock..but here are a few suggestions

It could be the relaxer she has in her hair. How often does she get perms? It should be more than once every 8 weeks. Also does she wear a scarf when she goes to bed at night? Our hair tends to get really dry especially when it is chemically treated and materials like cotton just dries it out more. So a silk scarf may be helpful so her pillow isn't robbing her of all hair oil.

Otherwise I would suggest a good conditioner ...Organic root stimulator hair mayo is a good one. You can find that at any drug store. Put it in her hair and tell her to wear a clear shower cap for about 30 mins...so the conditioner really works in. For hair oil..I prefer lighter oils to pomade. I think pomade is waay to heavy and causes even more problems. I use Soft and Beautiful  Botanical Oil. It's also from the drug store and works fine. When styling her hair...ease up on the heat. That can also make matters worse.

Hth!

agree w/ everything ayo said except..........she probably should NOT get her hair relaxed more than every 8 weeks.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I knew I could get the scoop on some good products here. I will see her tomorrow - we are going back to school and birthday shopping(!) - so will pick up these things for her tonight.
