New York - Shoe stores
Permalink Closed

I'm going to New York this weekend.  It'll be my first time there.  Any suggestions on where to shop (esp. for cute shoes)?  Thanks in advance!

I was just there! There are a ton of great shoe stores, and unfortunately I didn't get to go in too many of them. I did really like the DSW they have there (can't remember the location, but it's the one that's upstairs, by Forever21?) because it had tons of designer shoes, which mine doesn't have.

8th street on the west side has toons of shoe stores (and at the end (if you're walking west) you can treat yourself to a hot dog at Gray's Papaya... oh, maybe that's just me, haha)

The DSW is in Union square across from the park on 14th street. It's good but not that much better than any suburban dsw imo. There's also a Filene's Basement right above it. Very hit-or-miss, but every once and awhile I find some really great pair for like $25. Same goes for Century 21 downtown. If you only have a limited time (and/or if you're not fond of digging through toons of shoes to find that one fab pair) you might want to skip these places. (I love 'em though, if I'm in the right mood).

what kinds of shoes are you looking for (boutique-y, bargain, mass)? There's always Bloomies on 59th and Lex, or a smaller one on broadway in soho... it would be on my list! :)

Editing to add: The reason I think dsw/filenes aren't thaat much better is that girls in new york *know* what's good, so i think it's much easier to score that awesome random find in a smaller town (i hail from a v. small town). same theory on vintage shopping here too.

The big department stores (Saks, Bloomie's, Bergdorf's) have great selections. They each have a contemporary shoe section and a designer shoe section.

I love Otto Tootsi Plohound for more unique finds.

Random locations of David Z and Make 10 can sometimes have cute stuff.

I never have much luck at DSW or Century 21. They seem to always have shoes that you could find cheaper on sale at department stores or zappos.com. And they don't seem to have much high end that is actually wearable. Usually you can tell how it ended up at a clearance store.

I live on the Upper East Side, which isn't huge on most people's to-do list (which means it much less crowded on the weekends than Soho or midtown!), but there are some great small boutiques on 3rd Avenue in the 70s.

what's your budget? not trying to be nosey, just get a better sense of what you're looking for.

one of my favorite places for shoes is macy's on 34th street though it is a zoo on weekends. imo it's a really good one stop shop for a wide range of affordable shoes. they have tons of stuff from nine west, bandolino, enzo, kenneth cole, coach, etc. there are shoes on the 5th, 4th (comfort shoes like hush puppies) and in the junior's department (steve madden, tribeca, chinese laundry). imo it's a really good one stop shop for affordable shoes.

the other girls have great suggestions, but just as an fyi saks and bergdorf carry higher end lines like sigerson morrison, kors, and marc jacobs in their contemporary departments and straight designer (manolo, choo, gucci) in the other floors. bloomies is a bit more mixed in terms of selection.

i will say the last time i was in bergdorf (about 2 weeks ago) they were having an awesome sale. 65% original price on shoes. i literally had to drag myself away from the loeffler randall section. so it's definitely worth checking out even if you're not looking for pricey shoes.
