Possible ingrown toenail question *GROSS*
Permalink Closed

So, about a week ago, out of nowhere, my big toe started being sore on the side; One night, it was actually throbbing and woke me up.

Fast forward a couple of days and the soreness is still there, but much less.  I put hydrogen peroxide on it at this time too.

The other day, I went to look at the toe again, and when I did, a little ooze came out of the side. I did the hydrogen peroxide thing again and that foamed.  I also started on home remedy stuff too:  Cleaning w/hydrogen peroxide, sterilizing w/rubbing alcohol, putting Neosporin on it and bandaging.  I started soaking in Epsom salts last night too. Oh, and I'm going to be putting a piece of cotton under the nail too, to lift it off the skin so the nail grows normally again and out of my skin (if that's what this is).

Now, while this is weird, I'm still not alarmed enough to go to the doc.  I still want to monitor it for a bit before I decide on that (I'm odd like that).

Is this an ingrown??  I ask because I thought ingrowns started w/pointy corners of the nail, but my sore spot is in the middle of the side of the nail, not at the corner.  My nail clippers have never been there.

I would highly recommend going to the doctor. My dad had an ingrown toe nail and he didn't do anything about it and eventually had to have part of his toenail removed.

it sounds like an ingrown.  I've had a few of these--waited too long and when I finally went to the doctor they had to put a shot in my toe to numb it and then cut the ingrown out.  It hurt like no other, I would go as soon as possible because as soon as they fixed it, it was a huge relief to be able to walk again without pain.

Yup!  It's an ingrown! I've had them all my life and suffered sporadiacally - with the resolve to cut the ingrown out myself with those special scissors - but the problem never went away completely.  First time I went to the doc - they told me what you said - put a cotton ball underneath so it would grow out - ugh - ugh - couldn't even touch it much less fit any amount of cotton - it was too ingrown.

After this past winter i suffered for weeks in misery of only being able to wear open toed shoes or uggs while it was infected and waiting 3 weeks to see the dr - i got referred to the podiatrist.  Had them removed on both feet permanently and sooo happy I did.

suggest - see the doc!

I actually don't think you need to see the doc.  You're doing all the right things.  Put some cotton under the nail to help it get out of there and let the nail grow out a bit.  I'd replace the cotton once a day so it doesn't start to smell and/or make the infection worse.

I had the same thing happen when I was in high school.  This is gross, but where my ingrown toenail was, the skin actually started to turn green.  My dad got me to put cotton underneath, which was excruciating, but it helped and that's all there was to it.

Just keep doing what you're doing, keep an eye on it, and if it gets worse instead of getting better, then go see a doc.

Yeah, I have to be practically dying to go to the doc But it seems that the pain is going away now and it didn't ooze today, so I think it's on the right track. It wasn't very ingrown at all either, since I was able to easily lift the corner of the nail and insert the cotton

Could you have bumped it or something?  I'm prone to ingrowns myself (all those years in pointe shoes to thank for that), but sometimes all it takes is a bump in the right place to send a not really ingrown nail through.

Keep it up with the cotton and the hydrogen peroxide and you'll be good to go in no time!

I've had similar stuff happen before. I never went to the doctor, and it was never ingrown. It had the ooozey/throbby part though. I think I just cut my toenails too short or something and it got infected.

Now I'm super careful about not cutting my toenails too short.

I'm always freaked when my toe is sore thinking it's ingrown since my brothers had to go to the doctor to get their toes done.  They came back with horrror stories how long the needle was and how painful it was.

So I don't clip my toe nails very short and I use that nail clipper file thingy between the nail and skin to make sure it never happens to me!

If it's not going away, see the doctor.

I had them for a years. I had the dr. cut them out a couple of times but got to where I could cut it out myself. I made my own little tool kit just for that (really sad lol). I just wouldn't quit messing with my toenails and cutting them too short- causing them to get ingrown. DH kept me from messing with it and it grew out (not grossly long but like a nail should be) and since then I have been ingrown free.

Ingrowns are the worst and I would never wish one on anyone. Normally I would say don't bother going to the dr- but if you don't know what you're doing you can make it worse. So don't mess with it except putting that cotton under there and if it does get worse- save yourself the pain and call the dr.
