My lack of hair color dilemma...
Permalink Closed

I dyed my hair reddish brown all through the fall and then I decided I was going to go blonde for the summer. But then my hair was getting a bit damaged and quite frankly, I couldn't afford to keep it up. So then I didn't want to dye it dark again because I was hoping it would grow out and I could just do an all over blondish color (my hair is naturally dark blonde/light brown) and let that be that. Unfortunately my hair hasn't cooperated. It's decided to be 3 different colors, much to my chagrin.

The roots (about 4 inches down) are my natural brownish/blondish color. The next layer is closer to the original dyed color (although it's since faded quite a bit and blends in with my original hair color pretty well). The final layer (the ends) is some kind of coppery color.

My friends have said I'm the only one that notices the difference in the hair color but I don't quite believe them. Of course that's what they'd say - they're my friends! When I wear my hair wavy, it is very difficult to tell any difference but when I straighten it - oh god, watch out!

So what do I do? Should I suck it up and spend the money to make it blonde again? (Really, really hard for me to do right now.) Is there an at-home solution to this problem? (not my first rodeo so I think I can handle the application.) Should I just go dark again even though I'm not sure I want to?

Oh I should mention that the boy is always *hinting* how he loved my hair in some pics around the house (all blonde - before I met him).

Here are some pics of blonde and dark, although currently my dark is much lighter and more red.

Ignore the huge gums and bad hair in the last pic.

edited to correct my bad spelling. I didn't die my hair. I dyed it.

I personally like the dark better than that light, but your current color sounds like it might be good too.

If I were you, I'd scrape together the money, if at all possible, and get to a salon. If they're good at correctional color (can you get any recommendations unless you already have a favorite colorist?) they can turn the 3 colors in your hair to the one color of your choice, whether it be blonde or brown. Oh, and btw, I love blonde hair with your skintone -- it really brightens up your face and is very flattering.

I really like you w/darker hair - it flatters your face and skin tone so well!  Plus, if it costs less money and is less upkeep for you - I'd go that route.

could you do a darker blonde all-over color? There are a couple of products out there that wash out in 4 weeks. (They won't lighten, though.) I've done that before when I wanted to even out the color. Then you could get highlights in a month or two. After a couple of doses of highlights, you should be back to looking pretty blond. I think highlights are a lot less harsh (and less upkeep) than allover color.

Personally, I like the darker hair, too! But you look awesome either way.

Hmmm, could you just cut off the ends as a temporary fix until you have the money to do what you really want?

I agree with Christine, if there is a way you could go to a salon to get it fixed it would probably be much easier on your hair. After you get it corrected then it would be easier for you to take care of the roots at home, than it would be for you to try to fix it now.

I think you can pull of either color quite nicely, but I love the dark.

A color correction is so expensive. What if you cut off as much of the ends as you could stand, then low-lighted some strands with the darker color (to help even out the ends and combat the 3 part rainbow you've got going), then toss in some dark blong highlights to further break it up and help the ends blend in. It would jsut be 2 boxes of dye, plus a deep conditioner to start using to curb the damage. Then, I'd plan on wearing your hair wavy until you can do your whole head in one shade by a stylist.

I'd like to see you in a blonde with some dark lowlights, once all the evening out is done.
