who's your biggest enabler?
Permalink Closed

this post is inspired by my mom, who is the biggest enabler i know. if i have doubts about something she will totally encourage me to buy it. she got me to purchase an mj jacket & a bebe skirt that i love, so i'm happy about that, but shopping with her is very dangerous.

so who enables your purchases, outside of the st girls.

My future mother in law and my boyfriend.  Shopping w/my FMIL is so dangerous because she's a shopaholic!  My boyfriend rarely tells me not to buy something - he'll say oh just get it or will really talk me into something if he loves it.

I don't really go shopping with anyone else. I'm weird..I really, really like to shop alone. It's my thing and my alone time and I like to just go at my own pace and explore, etc.

I try going with friends or my mom and I just can't....

I agree. My biggest enabler is myself.

Same here. There are only two people that I actually like shopping with, but as I've become more conscious of my body, and therefore pickier about what I'll wear and what looks good on me, I don't shop with anyone else because I would bore them to tears. I breeze past things very quickly, but if I do pick up something it takes me ten years to decide if I like it or not. I'll go shopping with friends, but I usually won't buy anything. I'll go back the next day and take my time.

However, I take great stock in what my mom has to say about how I look. We've become more buddy-buddy as of late (as opposed to strictly mother-daughter) and have been sharing our body issues. She knows my concerns better than anyone, and I value her opinion, so if I bring things home I'll try them on for her. I like her opinion best because she'll tell me if something looks crappy, but she'll also rave if something looks good.

And this sounds stupid! but there's this lady at work who I really like, and when she thinks I'm wearing something cute she'll call me "doll" all day and it totally lights me up and I know it influences what I buy for work.

I agree with both of you girls.  I always tell myself "I have a job, I deserve to treat myself"  or "If I don't like it when I get home I'll just return it".

I LOVE shopping alone.  Sometimes I wonder if it's so no one will talk me OUT OF buying something.

Myself first, and my best girl friend second. She's the only one of my friends that's really girly, so we go shopping a lot but we have pretty different styles. Sometimes it's fantastic b/c I'll get things slightly outside my comfort zone that I end up loving - but other times I buy things that don't really fit with what I have and would be better in her wardrobe. She does it too though, so we usually end up trading clothes at some point.

probably myself.

the only person i shop with is my little sister and she's pretty honest so i wouldn's say she enables me, but if she loves something then she will make me get it.  and she's always right.  i'm definitely an enabler for her, but most of the time she sticks to her guns if she doesn't love it.  since she's in college, i enable her by reminding her that if mom was here she'd buy it for her, so it's really ok to put it on the credit card.   i'm sure my mom loves that.

my bf will encourage me to get things when we go out because i never buy anything when we go out together (except for alcohol).  i hate shopping with him for myself, but i love shopping for him.  so eventhough he knows that i shop alone, i think he still thinks that i rarely buy anything except for when i know exactly what i want and then i might go get it with him.

i think i have just seen too many guys waiting 1/2 and hour, hour, 2 hours, watching their gfs try on clothes and i swore i would never do that to my bf since there's enough time when i'm alone that i can shop.

My mom, too. She loves to shop probably more than I do and shopping with her is dangerous. She never discourages me from spending money.

If I am talking about something I like my BF will say to go ahead and get it.  I enable myself as well.  Usually if I see something I like I won't buy it right away, usually in a couple days if I'm still thinking about it, then I will buy it.

My husband by far. But his is selfish motivated - if I buy stuff & spend money on me he doesn't feel guilty buying stuff & spending money on him. So his understanding of how much I spend is directly proportionate to how expensive the new toy he is coveting is!

my sister Cali! She's a terrible enabler, but she is also very honest. She's my favorite person to shop with!

I'd have to say I enable myself, and maybe two of my best girlfriends at work. One is frugal like me, and the other one just tell me to buy it, so.... LOL

I agree. I don't have any friends who like shopping as much as I do, so I always feel like I can't shop properly with other people. It always feels like I'm dragging them around.

probably myself... i always talk myself into things by saying to myself "i work too hard" "i travel too much" "i need to treat myself"--- unfortunatly, i say that too often to myself!

other than myself, its probably my boyfriend (especially when buying high end jeans)

I used to say that too!  I always felt sorry for myself because I had to travel for work and I had lots of "shopping therapy" too!

It's a tie between my mom and myself. I don't even view it as enabling, if I want something I just buy it.

I don't really care to shop with anyone else other then my mom, she has excellent taste and I can always trust her judgement.
