What to pack??
Permalink Closed

Hi everyone,

Please Please help me. I hate packing and I have to pack for a trip to NYC to visit my brother and his girlfriend over the holiday weekend ... Saturday to Wednesday (4 nights, 5 days).

I am sure we will be doing a lot of walking and some casual activities. Not sure if we'll be dressing up for anything or not. I know my 22-year-old sis and I will go out to a club one night.

The weather is going to be in the low to mid-80s with a chance of thunderstorms some days.

I know we are going to be taking pictures, so I want to look ok. Thanks!

I went to NYC last summer for around the same amount of time. I'm at work, but I promise promise to get back to you.

I was in NYC about this time last summer, and it was very humid. Not sure if you are from a humid climate or not...but you might want to prepare for that.

IIRC, I brought a couple of a-line skirts (one denim, one cotton), a pair of casual pants (you could use cropped or not), and a pair of jeans. I'm a jeans girl and though I didn't wear them in NYC much, I wore them on the plane both ways (I get cold easily).

Tops were tanks and one 3/4 sleeve top. Also I brought a light cord blazer in case I got chilly at night, but I didn't really need that.

Bring comfy shoes! I did a lot of walking and though I love heels, I knew my feet couldn't take all that in high heels. About a 1" heel was the highest I brought (for going out to dinner w/DH) and the rest of the time I wore the same pair of sandals for walking/shopping/sightseeing. I try to bring as few shoes as possible when traveling because they take up so much room.

I have never been out to a NYC club, so can't advise what people will be wearing. I'd say just wear what suits you, and suits the club rules (if there are any) about attire. Some places have more of a dress code and some don't, I'm sure.

Last year sometime, Nylabelle did a feature on packing for trips - city, mountain, beach, etc. I can't find it in the archives but maybe someone else knows where it is? I think it might be helpful to you.

Have a great time!

It will be very humid-- be sure to bring clothes for warm weather. Skirts, dresses, etc.

But if it is cool enough, dressy jeans and a cute top will be good for just about anywhere you go, unless you go out to dinner somewhere that is very old-fashioned and fancy (like somewhere that requires jacket and tie for men). At anywhere young and hip, you'll see lots and lots of jeans.

Comfy shoes are a must! And be careful with light colored shoes-- they can get very dirty on the city streets (white flip flops can be a bit scary). So if you have pristene white shoes that you want to keep pristene, you may want to leave them home.

It isn't that different from any other big city. People may be a bit more fashion-conscious than in some other places, but you'll see a little bit of everything. So you can fall anywhere you would like on the everything spectrum :)

Have fun!

Thanks for the suggestions!

I found out some of our activities:

Museums (art)

Outdoor concert (including Jose Gonzales!)

Walk over Brooklyn Bridge

Chinatown

Shopping (Century 21, Soho)

If any of you have additional ideas, let me know. It has been a long time since I have visited NYC.
