Found a lump
Permalink Closed

so about a month ago a discovered a lump in my left breast and went to the gyno to get it checked out.  She did an "exam'' with her hands and said that it was more than likely a cyst.  She said that she would check it again when I go in for a pap (in a couple of weeks).  The lump is still there, it feels like a little marble.   I guess what I'm wondering is have any of you guys ever had these? How long did you have it? Should I ask for addt'l tests if she sends me on my merry way?

I would have been upset if she didn't do anything like a mammogram or biopsy (whatever they do!) right away!  Time is cruicial if it's serious, I don't think she should have brushed it aside for later.

Here is some info from Webmd;

A new lump can be felt in breast tissue. Most lumps are pea-sized. If you find a lump, don't panic; 8 out of 10 lumps are not cancerous. A lump is most often caused by a cyst, a fibroadenoma, or generalized breast lumpiness (fibrocystic breast changes), none of which are cancerous.

There is a lot more info on there if you want to read it.  Regardless, if you are concerened you should speak up and tell you doctor that.  If you want her to do other tests say so. If she denies you, then it may be time to find another doctor. HTH

I agree that I don't think she should have waved it off. I would have issues with waiting even a couple of weeks.

I agree with the others the Dr. needs to do more test. I had a breast biopsy  about 10 yrs ago, I had a lump on my right breast and it kept getting larger everything turned out okay it was just a cyst. Let us know how everything goes

I have cystic breasts, which basically means that I've always got cysts kind of coming and going.  They vary in size based on where I am in my cycle and usually last about 3 - 4 months.  A gyno should be able to feel the difference between a cyst and a lump that would cause concern.

I'd do some research and ask a lot of questions at your next exam.  If you aren't comfortable w/ the answers you get, ask for an ultrasound.  Breast tissue in women under 40 tends to be too dense for mammograms to be effective.  I'd also really get to know your breasts by doing self exams regularly (if you aren't already).  You'll want to be able to tell if the cyst changes significantly and how it should feel.

I'm so sorry.  I know this can be really scary.  Breast cancer is very common in my family.  All 5 of my Mom's sisters had breast cancers and one of my cousins died of breast cancer at age 30.  So, when I found the cyst I completely freaked out, I was terrified.  However, it is true that most lump type things are harmless.

Try not to worry to much.  But, be vigilent in getting the info you need until you are comfortable.

Hey Rosie. I've had a cyst before.  I had it for probably 2 years before I did anything about it.  I was in junior high when I found it and thought it was weird so I never brought it up to my mom or anything. Finally in high school I had the doctor check it out.  Because I was so young she said it was most likely benign. (sp)?  It was probably a bit bigger than a marble.  It was very hard and seemed to move if I pushed on it.  I had it removed....simple surgery.  If it bothers you that your doctor didn't give you a mammogram or anything I would just ask and say that it would make you feel more comfortable to know for sure.  If it is just a cyst though, I would still consider getting it removed.  Hope I could help...let me know if you have questions.

I have cystic breasts also and it's no big deal. I freaked out once because I thought I felt a lump (or lumps actually) but it was all just me being paranoid. Of course, it's always better safe than sorry, so if you're worried, insist that your doctor do more tests. You're the patient, not her. Good luck!
