smoked a couple of cigarettes in college, like maybe three.

bf smoked but quit a couple of months into dating me. he claims that he wouldn't have quit if he hadn't started dating me because its the bars (social smoking) that would make it the hardest and we didn't go out that much to bars in the beginning.

parents smoke, three of four sisters smoke, uncles/aunts smoke, grandparents smoke (ya know...before they died of cancer and stuff).

no to all of the above! my grandfather died of lung cancer...so my dad was always really diligent about us not smoking. my sister used to smoke, though.

i find it really repulsive and can't wait till we get a smoking ban here.

same execpt my mom wasn't a smoker.

nothing was better than a cigarette after a nursing exam.  that's kinda messed up but it's true.  so i smoked occassionally at the bars in college, and ALWAYS after my nursing exams with my fellow classmates.  i think it's truly amazing that i don't because ALL of my friends in college did.  but i think the real reason i didn't is because of my parents.  my dad's a dentist and my mom's a nurse.  so i felt like i would be un-doing my dad's life work.

i think it's funny that my mom, the nurse, said she'd rather have us kids drink than smoke cigarettes, and smoke other substances (top spelled backwards) than drink heavily.

ETA: now i think the smell is gross.  i hate bars that are really smoky and i could never date a guy who smoked.

as the lone smoker of the forum, apparently, i just want to add a few things.

i hate the smell, too.  i hate people who are inconsiderate about their smoking.  i don't smoke around my friends that are bothered by it - i'll walk away  if i really need to smoke while i'm with them.  i make a conscious effort to not blow smoke in anyone else's direction.  sometimes the wind takes over, and i can't help that.  i don't leave my butts on the sidewalk.

i know it's gross and smelly and killing me.  i've been smoking for about 15 years and have "quit" twice.  once in hs for a short time, once about two years ago for three months.  it was the worst three months of my life.

i'm going to try to quit again soon, i think, but it's just so hard.  plus, i really *like* to smoke.  despite the dirty looks and comments.

pathetic, i know.

I don't my husband doesn't, my parents don't & no one in my family does. I tried it & I didn't like it at all. Although I will admit to really enjoying a clove cigarette from time to time - now never though cause DH despises it & I can respect that.

The guy I dated right before DH smoked & I couldn't stand it. To be honest I look back on it & can't believe I put up with it as long as I did - it was on my "can not tolerate" list.....

used to, used to, still do.

My SO smoked before I met him. Apparently he was an avid smoker. He quit about 3 years before I met him.

I smoked until last August. So, almost one year!! I still have a very occasional cigar. I know, yucky, but one cigar every couple of months is way better than 10-12 cigs a day.

asf I was the same way as you. I was (I felt) very considerate of others. Also, I tried not to let cigs run my life. And yeah, I liked to smoke. I quit using the patch. Try it!! It really works. I was on it for 7 weeks. Never had a real craving. Sometimes I wanted to smoke just to have something to do. But I resisted. This was the only time I ever tried to quit. So I am feeling a wee bit smug. Oh, with the patch you get technicolor dreams too!! Seriously. I kind of miss those. And I didn't gain any weight either. Didn't lose any...but still!! I was really careful about that. I know I sound like one of those super annoying ex-smokers, but you will feel better, smell better, and the thing I like the best is I seem to have so much more time. I don't have to take time out to go smoke. I can just keep on keepin' on!!

And yes, my parents still smoke. My mom has health problems, but she still won't quit. I think my dad still smokes.

ETA asf, you are not pathetic. At all. Do not feel bad. If you want to quit, you will.

ASF, I am a smoker too, although it is hard for me to think of it like that.  I started two years ago (at the age of 22, how stupid is that?) and have one or two cigarettes a day.  My BF smokes too, which is one of the reasons why it is hard to quit.

My mother has smoked since she was a young teenager but never smoked in the house--even so, the smell of smoke never bothered til I was in high school.

I hang out with a lot of smokers, most of whom I have known well before becoming a smoker and they are all very considerate of the nonsmokers, so it surprises me, Joceybaby23, that you find the smokers around you to be rude.  That is really too bad.  I am sorry.  Most of the ones I know, know that they have a very bad habit and don't want to endanger others.

I am very glad though, that my city has passed a smoking ban--I am for it 100%.

ETA:  My mother does not know I smoke.  She has always made it clear that was the one thing I could do to dissappoint her entirely.  I never thought I would start, right up until when I did.

hahaha.  that too.  i haven't even looked at the price of cigarettes in years until i was with a girl who was buying cigs.  i wish i could've seen the look on my face when i looked up and saw $8.00 for a PACK.  wow.  i couldn't believe it.

My BFF used to sound just like you. She tried to quit a few times, even had me hide her cigs from her (we lived together) but in the end she decided to do hypnotherapy and it worked for her. She's smoked like 2 cigarettes since then and that was oh, about a year and a half ago.

For me, I never smoked until I was 18, extremely drunk, and smoker friends were french inhaling around me. In my state, it looked cool and I was certain I could do it. Ugh. Bad idea. From then on I smoked maybe a few times a year and I very obviously wasn't a smoker. I haven't touched one in years though, so that's good. I'd smoke a Cuban though, if offered.

My SO doesn't smoke and never has. Good. My dad smoked all growing up and still does. He smokes cigars but he smokes them like people smoke cigarettes, so it's not like it's better for him or anything. I won't get into how mad his smoking makes me.

I have never even taken a puff.  If you were part of the class of 2000, in grade school there was a big smoke free campaign.  1st grade we made promises to ourselves that we wouldn't smoke by putting this little thing on the chalk board saying we wouldn't do it.

Nobody in my family or extended family smokes (except my two brothers who are lost causes) .  My grandparents smoked but quit when I was very young, but they are no longer living.

I'm glad I don't work anymore because there is this one girl who I thought was rather disgusting.  She'd be sitting in the lunchroom and the whole room would reek of nasty old cigarette smell!  What was even nastier is if she put her coat next to your on the coat rack!  They really should have separate coat racks for smokers and non-smokers.

I smoked since I was 13 and quit in January.  I have had other occasions where I quit, but I believe this is the longest I have gone without even a puff - and it's my intention to never go back.  I did enjoy it though. If it wasn't so damaging to my health, I'd probably still be smoking.

ETA: I do find the smell really repulsive now and am hoping that Michigan bans smoking in all public establishments in the near future.  I just returned from California and it was so nice to have all the bars and restaurants smoke free.

I also look at smokers differently now - they either look stupid or skanky to me and I hate that I appeared that way at one time too.  I think I just have a really heightened sensitivity/repulsion to all things cigarette related now.

Nope, I don't smoke. I am disgusted by it. I've never seriously dated anyone who smoked either. My dad smokes, but he's cut down alot over the years. No one else in my family smokes.

I have smoked an occasional cigarette in the past, but that's just stupid for me (other than for the obvious gives-you-cancer reasons) b/c I have asthma and allergies and cigarettes turn me into a wheezing, sneezing mess. And that's just not cute.

I currently dont smoke because i am pregnant but before I found out I smoked about 4 a day. I accualy kind of like the smell. Its comforting for some odd reason.

My parents dont smoke, but my grandma does. Maybe that is where the comfort factor comes in. I dont know I dont really have an opnion on the subject of other people smoking. I'm pretty desensitized to people smoking and dont give a shit.

no one in my family smokes.

when i lived in paris, i smoked.  but i think it was more of the environment that led me to it.  i wanted to be that cliche of a french girl sitting in a cafe smoking a cig and drinking a cafe au lait.  plus, on school breaks, everyone smoked.  i just sorta joined in...

when i got back to the states, i stopped smoking except for the occasional drinking/smoking stint.

now i can't stand the smell of them and when i go out to a bar, my chest hurts the next day from the 2nd hand smoke.

I don't smoke, my parents don't, but DH and his parents/family do. DH and his brother both said they started at a pretty young age because of how much their mom enjoyed her cigarettes. DH is actually in the process of quitting. He is using the patches and doing very well. Several of our friends and he all decided to quit at the same time. I'm hoping it's successful

used to.  I smoked from age 15 to about 21.  NEVER a lot though, never a pack a day or anything like that.  It was more like a few cigs a day, then more when I was drinking with friends.  a pack would always last me the whole weekend if friends weren't bumming too many anyway.

I will still bum a cigarette now and then (like once a year at a friend's annual Christmas party or at the OU/TX watching party).  I can't finish a whole one anymore  because it hurts my throat and is just gross anymore, but a few drags does feel good, sorry for the honesty.  shame shame shame.

ETA:  my dad smokes, a lot, more than I ever did.  the guys I dated rarely were smokers and my husband has never smoked...but a lot of his friends do, so he wasn't too bothered that I was a smoker.  my best girlfriends did smoke too, but the majority of my friends were/are non-smokers.

i started smoking when i was 16 quit when i was 21 and found out i was pregnant.  smoked a couple of times after i had my daughter, only when i was drinking a lot.  i still to this day will go snuggle up to my hubby after he has smoked and my mouth will water at the smell of the fresh smoke.  and i think about cigarettes not all the time, but kind of a lot for a non smoker.  i think if it weren't for the fact that i do want to have more kids and want to set a good example for them, i would be a smoker again.

my parents both smoked my whole life and quit 10 years ago when they decided to be the perfect parents and petend they didn't have a scummy, crappy, drug induced screwed up past.  now they pretend they never did that kind of stuff.

my hubby smokes and has smoked since he was 13 and is now 26 almost 27.

I smoke very very rarely (maybe a dozen times a year, tops) and I don't even inhale (hurts too much).  It's usually just a social/drinking thing.  I do like clove cigarettes, though... the paper is sweet, and the smoke smells good.  If I ever buy a pack, it's always cloves.  (Side story: I out of town for a wedding last fall and lit up a clove on the balcony of a bar that people were hanging out at after the reception.  I can't tell you how many cigarettes I gave away that night!  It was so funny... wedding guests that were total strangers to me followed the smoke and were like, "Is that a clove?  That's awesome... can I have one?"  Too funny...)

My DH does not smoke, though he did in high school and college.  I doubt he would ever start up again, but I don't think I'd have a huge problem with it if he did, largely because...

My mother smokes.  She has smoked since she was 18 and is very defensive about it if you ever broach the subject.  She doesn't smoke heavily (I think she's actually cut down some the past couple of years), but it is definitely a habit.  My father used to smoke pipes(infrequently) and now will enjoy a cigar on ocassion.

As for bars and stuff, I just deal with it.  I live in the South, and smoking in public is just part of the landscape.  If I'm going out where I know there is going to be smoke, I just wear something cotton and washable.  The only thing that sucks is when your coat gets all smokey, 'cus ya can't wash that.

Most of the smokers I know are very considerate.  I can understand how many people have a lower tolerance for smoke, though, so like most things, I figure it's a personal decision that is fine as long as you aren't a jerk about it and adversely affecting others.
