late on this thread but i have to say the paddington. there are some new paddington styles for fall that are more of a structured style vs. the slouchy, possibly trendy look of the original paddington. i think a satchel style is very cool!

however this style is more expensive than the original!!! :(

Congratulations on passing the Bar, you totally deserve a new bag!  so i have a few questions before i weigh in on the purse debate--how much is the gucci and how much is the paddington?  and what are the dimensions for both?  and what purpose are you looking for this purse to fulfill?

by the way, i think i have that gucci bag but mine is leather and it's the chocolate brown guccisima one.  and i have it in medium, not large (which was overwhelmingly big on me).  do you have the large or the medium?  also, who was the sales associate at gucci who helped you?  melissa labatut by any chance?  she's a total sweetheart and i adore her but your hunch is right, she uses that line quite a bit

It's all about the details IMO. The Paddington has a ton of beautiful ones that help justify its price. The Gucci is meh for the price if it's not leather.

I totally agree.

thanks everyone for all your response!  i'm still debating on the bag.  i tried on the Gucci bag again and i have to say it's HUGE ... much bigger than it looked in the store, but i like it better than the medium hobo.  i do love the paddington, but the only thing that holds me back is how heavy it is.  I have a MJ venetia and rarely ever use it b/c it is just so heavy that it gives me a shoulder and back ache whenever i take it shopping!  i'm afraid that the same thing will happen with the paddington.  so i guess both bags have their faults and neither one is perfect.   i've also debated on possible getting a Chanel bag, but a part of me feels like i'm not quite "mature" enough for one.

esquiress: Thanks for the congrats!  i think i'm just more relieved than anything that i don't ever have to go thru the torture of it again!  as for the bag, i purchased the large hobo in the fabric/canvas, for $1150.  The paddington is around the same price, so that's not really the issue.  i'd like a purse that i could wear dressed up or casual, and both of them would seem to fit.  I guess what's more important to me is that it'd last through the trends and would be a classic that i could use for the years to come.

btw, the sales associate who helped me was Cheryl Nunez, and she was really AWESOME -- so friendly and helpful, which made the purchase so much easier.  i was totally ignored at saks earlier that day, so i guess her friendliness made the bag that much more enticing.  i'm really a sucker for good customer service.

yeah, their customer service rocks, everyone is super-sweet and i'm a total sucker for that too.  so anyway, i think that $1150 for the gucci is worth it because of its size--seriously you could use that bag as luggage, i could pack a whole weekend trip in there!  so that, imo, makes up for the fact that it's not leather.  i also think it's very season-less, especially in cali, you could wear that bag just as easily in the summer as in the winter.

having said that, the paddington, imo, is more "special" for the reasons lilykind mentioned, the level of detail and originality of the design, etc.  i also don't think it will be going "out" anytime soon.  it kind of reminds me of the kooba sienna in that sense, people went crazy when it came out and it's still selling really well just because it's such a great bag.

so, if the purpose is to have a great everyday bag, i'd pick the gucci.

if the purpose is to have a truly special bag, i'd go w/ the paddington.

now, if you're looking for a true classic that will never ever ever go out of style that you could like, give to your grandkids, i'd have to say get a chanel--the classic style that's been around since coco herself.  i have it in red lambskin and it's not as "mature" as you'd think--i can wear it w/ jeans or a suit and it works well w/ both.  anyway, hth!
