Acupuncture / Ear Stapling / Etc.
Permalink Closed

Has anyone heard of ear stapling? Elle? You seem to know everything, right?

One of my BFFs just got her ear stapled to help with weight loss. I initially thought it was a load of crap (still kinda do) but then she started telling me about all her friends who lost weight with it. Bunk or real?

On to acupuncture / herbology - anyone ever visit one of these kind of doctors? Another BFF has gone to a hypnotist in the past to help her stop smoking / stop craving carbs / etc. (Ha - don't laugh!) It worked for her but I'm curious as to alternative sources of medicine. Especially for weight loss/food addictions.

Anyone have any experience with any of this kind of stuff?

Just as an fyi, I'm very skeptical about weird "get rich quick" schemes (aka get skinny fast) but I can't help but be curious.

TIA!

I've been to a hypnotist before, and it very well may be that the one I went to was a load of crap, but my experience was just that, a load of crap.

I'm also interested in accupuncture, more so for the supposed overall well being benefits of it.

what? ear stapling???? When you first said that I figured it was some cosmetic surgery for ears that stick out, but to help you lose weight?? I'll be curious to see the answers to this!

From what my friend told me, it's kind of like a piercing except smaller. It's inside the ear in a spot that's supposed to help with food cravings and appetite suppression. It cost her about $60 and it will last 6 months, apparently. She has to treat it with antiseptic for about a week and then not worry with it for the rest of the 6 months. Then, if she wants to lose more weight, she goes in and gets it done again. The stapler told her she should lose between 3 and 5 pounds a week.

The people she knows that have tried it lost a lot of weight, apparently. I don't know if they were doing anything else in conjunction with the stapling, if it's a load of crap, or what.

Though I have heard of the ear stapling, I don't know anyone personally that's had it done.  I think the way it's supposed to 'work' is to be constant acupuncture for that ear point, which is supposed to be tied to weight loss.  I haven't really read anything on it, but honestly I think that's because nobody wants to write about it since there's no real way to prove it works and could even potentially be dangerous if it gets very infected or you get someone who doesn't know what they're doing putting it in.

Now regular acupuncture is a different story.  I think this would definitely be worth a shot if you could find a practitioner that had a good reputation with and made you comfortable philosophy-wise.  I know of people who've had good luck with acupuncture addressing underlying problems that were throwing their cycles off, and helping them get pregnant.

So I don't think doing acupuncture itself helps you lose weight.  They'd probably talk to you about your health and any symptoms you're having to determine if you have some kind of underlying metabolic or hormonal imbalance, and try to work on that which may in turn help you lose weight.  Sometimes they give you herbs to take too (which you can take or not take depending on how comfortable  you are with that).  Sometimes they're really gross, so if you're shoving lumps of nasty herbs down your throat all day you might not have the appetite to eat anything else anyway !

Though IMHO, if all that's causing you to hold on to a few extra pounds is lack of exercise and less that ideal eating habits, I don't think acupuncture has any magical motivation/willpower effects ....

I don't know anything about ear stapling or accupuncture, etc, but I think a lot of times it is simply mind over matter, if you believe it will work then it does.

I know two people who have had ear stapling and it didn't work for either of them.  One girls ear got super infected - it was disgusting.  Soooo not worth the $60, in my opinion and theirs.

I've had acupuncture done (for chronic pain) and I asked the Dr. about using it for weight loss. He said we could try it, but he wasn't overly optimistic that it would help with cravings and appetite suppression.

As it turned out, it only helped intermittently for the pain, so I stopped going after several sessions. Never did give it a try for weight loss. But based on what the doctor said, I don't think it's some easy fix for that.

i think it's a mind over matter thing.

i do something a bit different.  i take 1 teaspoon of psyllium husk with water (8 oz with the husk, and 8 oz. plain) before meals because it helps me with digestion (aka being regular).  on the container it says that it may aid in weightloss due to the fiber. i noticed as soon as i read that it may aid in weightloss, that i started to eat less after taking it.  yes, it could be the fiber, the 16 oz. of water, and the mentality, but for whatever reason, i ate less after.  it wasn't expensive and i think that just that little mind trick helped me especially when i tend to eat more at dinner.

i've heard a lot of people say positive things about accupuncture in helping with pain, but i haven't heard any success stories about weightloss.

I know someone who did it and lost weight. But I think it's a load of crap since they also gave her a diet to go along with it. Hmmm, perhaps it was the diet and not the staple that helped with that?

Interesting article. I have to admit, when my friend told me she did this, I was convinced it was nonsense. But then she got in my head. Now I'm back to nonsense. But hey, if she loses weight (and she's not dieting), I'll let y'all know.
