A question for the marrieds

Okay, it's a dumb question.


I filled out our marriage license app and sent it in, and it's already back and ready to go.  It wasn't until I ran across a topic about changing names that it crossed my mind I might have filled it out incorrectly ....


The bride's section has three spaces for names:
Brides name (I wrote First, Middle, Mylast)
Maiden name if different (I wrote n/a, assuming it was for people who had been married before, so their current name wasn't the same as their maiden name)
Previous name (I wrote First, Middle, Oldlast since I'm half adopted)


This means that nowhere on this document does my married name appear.  I'm wondering now if I should have filled in my married name under Brides Name, my current name under Maiden name, and my adopted name under Previous name.  There aren't instructions supplied with the app ....


I'm wondering how I'm going to use this doc to change my name, when nowhere does the name I'm changing to appear.  It seems odd to fill in my married name under brides name if that isn't actually my name, right?


And ......... I'm officially overthinking things!

a marriage license has nothing to do with a name change - just a legal document.  a name change choice due to marriage is totally unrelated to the legal binding and you do not refer to it in a marriage license - you can change your name whether you are married or not.   hope that clarifies?

Thank you!  That does make sense


So I guess technically I could take my marriage certificate in as proof of marriage, and change my last name to Bananahammock ....... right?


I hate Big Bad Official Legal Documents.  I was just afraid I'd filled it out wrong and I wouldn't find out until after the wedding that it wasn't actually legal ...

yes!? please, for me? change your name to Mrs. Bananahammock?!? you don't even need to have a marriage license to do it either! do it now!


so yes, even without a marriage certificate you could change your name to Mrs. Bananahammock - a name change is only that - a name change - it is not recognized in any way in relation to a marriage even if that's why you're doing it.

I work at a bank and we usually use the marriage cert to do the name change. (old to new) If you were legally changing you name, but not due to marriage, we usually ask for the form from the county.


If they do not have that we use the old and new drivers lic.


I would call social security and see what they require, i think they are the most difficult.

Are you guys sure that this doesn't vary from state to state? My experience was contradictory to what Detroit said. I would check with your town/city hall just to be safe.

How was it different, wicked?  Where you required to put your married name on the license?

Yes, we had to put our current name and married name on the license.


In MA the marriage license is the legal proof of the name change. Of course you can always go to a courthouse at any time to change your name, but in MA you just put your new name on the license and you're all set. And like Deuce said the marriage certificate will be proof of the name change.


Again, like other aspects of marriage it probably varies from state to state.

are you filling out the license for colorado or oregon? just curious.

The marriage license is for Oregon Relrel, since the wedding is there.  I'm not changing my name until after the wedding - too many complications for travel arrangements, etc.  We move in 2.5 weeks anyway, and the whole name changing business is way too much for me to tackle amidst the moving/wedding/honeymoon madness.


I guess I'll call tomorrow.  The instructions for the license basically consisted of telling you to use black ink and not to abbreviate.  I'm thinking I did it correctly, but it's always good to make sure!

See, I interpret this as:


Bride's name: First, Middle, Husband's Last or NewLast


Maiden name (if different): if the bride is changing her name, here is the space to write her old name


Previous Name: this I'm a little confused about... maybe if you're divorced/widowed and you previously took your husband's name (ex: Mrs. Josephine Albersnacker) 


Also, in NY the name change is/can be part of the marriage license. Nothing separate is required (for the state).

Okay, but if they're tying the name change up with the marriage, how can that already be my name if I'm just now applying to them to be married ?


IF EVER there was a document that needed some fine print instructions on the back, this is soooo it people!

The county clerk said that it needs to be filled out with my current legal name and then I can change it to whatevah I want.  Yeah!

Good. I was thinking they were going to tell you this.


You shouldn't be referencing your husband's last name as your own last name until you are legally married.
