Best Moving Tips?
Permalink Closed

I'm moving on Saturday - other than being organized and packing like crazy tomorrow night - does anyone have any good suggestions for making it go smoothly?

I'm only moving a block (from our apartment to a townhouse) but I just hate the thought of moving :)

label your boxes so you can find stuff easily if you haven't thought of that.  Not really sure what else.  I've only moved a few times.  Mainly between dorms and home.

Just unload the boxes in the rooms they belong.  Unpack as quickly as possible too, it's so easy just to let the stuff stay in the boxes and relax!

best advice? hire movers. seriosuly, best decision we ever made.

but otherwise, label boxes clearly on the outside and put in room where they will go .Try to unpack ASAP. I also find that its easier to unpack lots of small boxes than fewer large boxes.

Don't label boxes with what's in the boxes, but write what room the box should go in. I'd read that being too specific can help unscrupulous movers steal from you.

Have beer on hand.

I agree with having more smaller boxes than less huge boxes, much easier to carry. Last time I was stupid enough to put all my books into one large box, and not even hercules could lift that thing!

I'm the queen of moving, but we always hire movers to do all the packing and unloading.  However, I usually always pack up a few things I want kept together on my own.  For example, if I moved again I'd want to decorate the top of my kitchen cabinets the same way, so I'd pack all that stuff in the same box and label it as "kitchen cabinet decorations."  I do the same with decorations by room so that they're all there in the same place when I unpack.

Oh, and use your pillows and towels as packing material - saves on paper and gets those things packed as well.

I label my boxes w/ the room AND the contents (but I'll abbreviate, just in case).  But I have 13 rooms, so it's a necessity for me so everything doesn't get totally lost.
