Is it bad to volunteer for a lay-off??
Permalink Closed

So I am planning to attend school this fall. My current company needs to lay-off 50 employees. I know I am safe but they are accepting volunteers. The severance package would basically pay me until when  I would leave for school anyways...so it would be like having the summer off but getting paid....I am tempted to volunteer, and that way someone with a family to support could keep their job. But does it look bad if I volunteer, would I have to put that on a resume???

I don't think it would look bad, I mean when they ask why you left your last position, just say that it was becase they were taking volunteers, and since you knew you would be leaving soon anyway you gave it up for those families with children!

I think it would be fine.  You don't have to put the reason you left the position on a resume, and you can be honest about something like that.

Honestly, layoffs are so common these days, even really top notch employees get layed off.

I think you should go for it as long as the funds will hold you through until school starts.

what a perfect situation and you will be saving someone's job who doesn't want to leave! definitely do it. it won't look bad at all.

I agree. If anything it looks good for you. You made it easier on the company by volunteering and also helped out families who didn't have an alternative. I say go for it!

I totally agree with this and IIRC, you don't like your job that much anyway.  Good luck with whatever you decide.

i would do it in a heartbeat, esp. if the school thing is set. the running joke in my office is that a bunch of us are *trying* to get fired ( a ton of people are leaving for school in the fall) so we can collect unemployment.

seriously though i think it'd be really awesome to volunteer esp. if that would prevent someone who really needed the job from getting laid off.

Take off for summer...one last hurrah, before school starts. Make sure everything is going to be as you stated, though...Wouldn't want them to pull a switch-a-roo or something. I think you'll be okay though.

if your def. going back to school, I don't think it will hurt. Fot all they know, you just want a last summer off. And if they ask, you can tell the truth cause it's totally nobel and legit. I'd do it in a heartbeat.

I agree you should take the summer off to enjoy yourself. I don't think it will look bad on your resume since the time you quit will be so close to the time you start back at school. There will not be a large time span to question IMO.

I think it is very considerate of you to leave so someone else can keep a job they need.

Thanks guys, I talked to my manager about volunteering. It is not guaranteed that they will let me since I am in the middle of a project, but I am crossing my fingers!
