is this just skanky?

I'm having a hard time deciding what to wear to my birthday party on Friday...

The outfit I was going to wear didn't work out as well as I had planned when I tried it on, so I'm trying to dig other things out of my closet. I have a shirt like this one
from Charlotte Russe, except mine is all black and it has this embroidered flower design on the front (but you can barely see it because the embroidery is black.

Anyway, I tried it on, and while it comes up sufficiently high, and you actually can't see any cleavage, I can't decide if it's still skanky. It's pretty much body-hugging because it's corset inspired, and also just the fact that it looks like a corset makes me think it will look like I'm trying way too hard? I'd pair it with pants or a long skirt, but I need some opinions! Be honest - should I just start over?

It isn't skanky, but I think it depends on where you are going. If your party is at a hip restaurant or a bar...you are fine. The local country club? Maybe not..

I sense from your note that you are feeling uncomfortable with your choice anyway. Have you worn it before? Are you worried about other people's reactions? If so, and you wore before, what happened then? Any weird reactions that made you feel weird?

If not, I would go with it & skinny jeans & some hot heels or something! I think you can celebrate your b-day any way you want...I think it's elegant with the flowers.

My party is at a friend's apartment (we're having a party together because our birthdays are so close...I'm not just hijacking his apartment!), so it's nowhere especially fancy. I've worn it once before, for an old boyfriend's birthday, but that was in the fall so I had a wrap on also, and didn't really feel so self conscious. No one said anything to make me feel weird, but I was also trying extra hard just because it was his birthday... which is why I think I might seem like I'm trying awfully hard now, especially since someone I am quite interested in will be at the party and everyone knows it. But I definitely can't wear a wrap this time, because the heat is sweltering this time of year, and usually the doors stay open and the apartment can't stay cold.

I think you'll be fine. I like the corset style and the print is fabulous. I think you'll be the hottest, prettiest, most elegant female in the room & you should be...it's your party, right?

I think maybe it's not the shirt...it is you trying to ensure you look your best. If you are worried about, lay out some other outfits....I'll bet you come back to this one, though. I like it.

why don't you wear a pair of pinstripe wide-leg trousers with it (maybe even a slightly loose or slochy pair)? that might cut some of the "super sexy" vibe.

I think you should do it and totally go for a 50's pin-up look (but not trashy). I think it would be cool with a pencil skirt and red peep toe shoes.

I don't think it's skanky to begin with..as long as you don't wear it with a mini skirt, you should be totally fine.

not skanky, and i think it could definitely work for your party (especially with the trousers lilykind suggested), but if you're not totally comfortable don't wear it.  you want your love interest to notice you, not you fidgeting with your top all evening.

I really like the idea of a pencil skirt! I might have to save that for another occasion since I'm already worried about looking like I put in so much effort (it's ridiculous, I know, it's my birthday... but I already dress up more than most of my friends all the time, and I'm tired of fielding their comments)... but the first special occasion where I can get away with that, I definitely will!

asf, you're right I guess if I'm uncomfortable I shouldn't wear it. I just can't decide if I'd feel divine or supremely self-conscious

I think I'm going to try out a few more outfits and see what all my options are

Here's my two cents: wear it! It's YOUR birthday, and you like the top, so why the heck not?!

I have a similar top (mine is black with lace inset, subtly, in the front) and I like to wear it with jeans of course or with a flowy white peasant-type skirt, so you might consider those options as you're making outfit choices.

I, too, seem to always get the "why are you so dressed up?" comments, and I think it's best to just ignore them. Wear what you like.

Oh, and happy early birthday!!!!

Why not wear it with a crochet short sleeve shrug.  It's barely any coverage, so it won't be hot, but enough to add details and reduce the skin, if that's your concern.
