Basics Help

Ok, so I am in the midst of reevaluating my wardrobe for many reasons-replacing old stuff, having a hard time finding what's cute but also age-appropriate now, etc. I've done lots of reading and looking at pictures from the site and have gotten some great ideas, and what I'm discovering is this...I really have a hard time shopping for and working basics into my wardrobe.

Sounds stupid, I know. But I really love details, and now I feel like I'm in this rut of having all these prints, stripes, embroidery, and all sorts of other details. I do have things to mix and match, but I really have nothing to put together those simple, classic looks in nice clean lines, solid colors, etc-real foundation pieces. So does anyone have any advice? I feel like I really don't know where to start. Are there general or specific items that would be on your must-have list of basics, i.e. black cardigan, certain color shoe, etc? It's like I've discovered this whole category of stuff I have no idea how to shop for! TIA

For me, basics are what allow my "standout" pieces to really shine. Unfortunately, lately I seem to have more "standout" pieces and hardly any basics to pair with them. So I'm working on changing that. I think it's partly because I am more willing to pay for details like embroidery, etc. that really make an item, but not willing to spend as much for basics. But those basics can be worn constantly, because they allow the detailed items to really shine. So I'm adjusting my thinking on basics and slowly filling those gaps in my wardrobe.

For me, basics are:

- skirts (to the knee or just below) in a range of solid colors that I can put with many things. Black, chocolate brown, white, etc. These are a-line or slightly fitted with a little flare or ruffle at the bottom. I can dress them up or down and they work for a variety of situations. I have several printed skirts in this type of cut, that I can put with beater tanks or cute tees (in summer) or sweaters (in winter) and then just add fun accessories.

- tanks and tees. If I like a (plain) top, I will buy several in colors that suit me and my wardrobe. Finding something that fits well on top can be tricky (I have really broad shoulders and am a C cup) so if I don't have to pay to have things taken in at the waist, it's a bonus and I'll grab several colors. These work well as mentioned above with my print skirts, and then also work as under-layers for sweaters and stuff in the cooler months.

- dresses. I don't have a ton - I kind of got away from wearing them once I left the corporate world - but there are so many fun ones available now, and I'm buying more lately. I look at whether the dress can be worn over jeans, or with tights when the weather turns cold, so that it is more transseasonal. If it's not that versatile, then I try to buy dresses that already work with shoes / bags in my existing wardrobe, so I'm not having to then go shop for more items.

- sweaters. I like a v-neck pullover type, and have a bunch of these in different colors. I can layer a tank / cami under them or just wear them with almost any bottom and add fun jewelry and sexy shoes. I can throw a skinny belt over them with skirts. Most are light enough to be worn under blazers, which are another staple of mine. Also cardigans are good layering pieces.

- denim. I *love* jeans. And when I'm lazy or uninspired, it's so easy to just put on a cute top and jeans. Or one of those v-neck sweaters and then some funky jewelry and shoes. I also have three denim skirts (pencil, a-line, and a shorter, almost-mini) and love them, because I can be a little dressier / girlier and still almost just throw on almost anything with them when I feel lazy.

Basic colors for my wardrobe are brown, green (in almost any shade), red, teal, pink. And black, though I got away from black for a long time and am now just starting to add it back into my wardrobe. I also add touches of plum/purple and pale blue, orange and charcoal gray, but my "go-to" colors are as listed above. My basic shoe colors are black, brown, silver, olive green, and red. I don't have a lot of basic shoes though, because I so love fancier styles. So that's something else on my own shopping list.

Hope that helps some!

this might seem really silly since you do say you've been having trouble shopping for basics...but my advice to you is to go shopping.

seriously though, do you have a mall near you that has a banana republic and a jcrew in it? or near each other? take a couple of hours and wander around in those stores. those, imo, are excellent stores for nice, clean-lined basics because there aren't too many busy prints...just fresh colors and soft neutrals (wow...did that sound like a catalog?). or perhaps if you don't have a store near you, try thier websites and run through the outfits that they have already put together. dare i say even request a catalog from them? (yeah yeah...then you would getting a new catalog every week!)

that's where i would start...look at the pieces that are used over and over again in the already-put-together-outfits and then go from there. hth!

Almost all of my basics are from Express, Banana Republic and Gap. I have a lot of office basics from Express (pencil skirts, button-down shirts, jackets, etc.) I have a ton of plain pieces from Banana Republic - mostly cardigans, sweaters, and button-down shirts. From gap I have a lot of jackets, skirts, and t-shirts.

You need to get one pair of dark wash jeans - probably best to start with Sevens. Find a pair you like and buy two of them - hem one for flats and keep the other for heels.

I also tend to be drawn to patterns...but I've found that the skirts/tops/jackets I keep the longest and wear the most are the plain colored ones.

hmm..what do you always wish you had more of?  Its different for each person- basics are best suited for your lifestyle, taste, etc.. i have bought "basic" things that i haven't used at all.  For me, I always find myself needing:

1) jeans- I don't have to dress up to work- so i can wear jeans everyday, and am doing a lot of shlepping around on the job- so i need something durable.  Plus, I often want to wear jeans at night.  I've worn these black j brand jeans to the ground:

2) slouchy cardigans, cropped cardigans- I always want the first when wearing jeans, and the second when wearing dresses..I NEVER have enough because i almost always bring one with me in case of AC in summer, or if i get too cold in the winter.  i'm going to scout around vintage stores for cardigans- i don't really like that many i've seen.

3) a couple of slouchy-ish tshirts in white/black/another neutral.  I have this in two colors and its awesome!  I sized up.

weathervane tee

4) shoes, any sort (boots, sandals, dressy, cas) that are quirky yet basic yet COMFORTABLE.  i live in nyc and walk 50-60 blocks a day- i have to have comfortable shoes.  this eliminates the desire for 98% of the shoe population.

5) filmy tops/dresses for summer that are washable.  I bought this top- its really comfy, for just hanging around.

annie jumper

6) a few basic go-to pieces for night- i have a black pleated tank top that is great because i don't have to worry about staining it and i can dress it up with accessories yet its not too basic that i feel unlike myself.  I do struggle in this department though.

A year ago- i would have said my basics would have been a lot different- my lifestyle has changed entirely though.  It really depends on what you NEED the most (i hate saying that applied towards clothing, but you know what i mean)
