Ok.. I am currently renting the whole basement to myself in a townhouse which belongs to a friend of mine but she s much older. I have my own bedroom, full bathroom, and a living room. the living room is seperated from my bedroom and bathroom by a very small hallway. end of that hallway, there is a stairs that leads upstairs for me to get out of the house. I share kitchen with her and her "lover".  U see,  the laundry room is right next to my bedroom in basement. the both ladies who lives upstairs comes down to basement on a daily basis ( I have never met anyone who goes in basement on a daily basis) I feel as if I never have any privacy when I m laying in the living room watching tv or just be out and about. When u arrive at the hallway after the stairs, u can see me clearly from where the stairs is at where I m sitting on the sofa. I m tired of them looking at what I m up to everyday. They must have some kind of chat with me everyday. I m really sick of this. I want some privacy. I sometimes would like to watch tv without a bra on  (with a shirt on, of course!)  I m getting frustrated about this part. Other than this, i have no problem and love living here because it saves me a lot of money as I start my job soon in DC. I have tried telling them several times to give me some privacy but they re still acting as if the basement belongs to them.  I even am starting to consider to add curtains on the ceiling to block the view between stairs and living room.  Should I?  or you have any ideas? pllllleeease help me before I go insane!  Thanks.

I would add curtains, asap.  Hopefully that works.  Good luck!

Ditto, or a folding screen. If you have to, act like it's part of your "decor."

I like Cricket's idea of a folding screen.

How about one step further and adding an actual door.  Although it might cost you in the range of $350, it might be worth if for your privacy as well as securing your space from others.  It's easy to put a lock on a bedroom door, but with your living room open, maybe you wish to keep others out from that as well.

This might be a good addition for the owner's as well.  Just a thought.

Folding screen!! I never thought of that. hmm.. I ll consider either of them curtain or folding screen to block the view.

I wish I can add a door but this townhouse isnt my home at all. I cannot change or add anything in this house without the owners content and I defintely know she wouldnt want a door there.

Any good folding screens out there!!??

as for the curtain, i can easily buy a big piece of fabric and sew it into a pair of curtain and tie them up from those easy pull off stick hooks... That's my project this week: privacy to be built by me, only me! (with all of your help also!)

Is it possible to agree on a certain time frame they can be allowed to go downstairs into your area to use the laundry?  I would also put up a screen or something for privacy.
