Bank information needed.. US Bank, Wells Fargo?
Permalink Closed

I need to switch banks in the next couple of months and it seems as if US Bank and Wells Fargo are the most common in my new city.. Are any of you familiar with these banks? do they have good (free) online banking capabilities? any good or bad things you know about them?

thanks!

I have WellsFargo and I'm fairly happy with them. Online banking is free but online bill pay isn't for me. I think some accounts include free online bill pay though.

I have Wells Fargo. I think they're fine. I'm just in college though so I really don't do much with my money.

I bank with US Bank.  Their online banking is free, their checks are not free.  I had some idiot who miss printed my name AND address two times in a row made mistakes and they wanted to charge me twice for the checks!

And they are greedy money hungry, once I had totally forgot that I had an insurance payment coming out.  I had done many purchases before the date the insurance was taken out which I had money for.  Well, they decided to rearrange some things, putting the insurance first then about 4 other purchases so I would have to pay the fee 4 times!  I had never done this before and I asked them to remove all but one charge to make it fair (most banks would take it all off if it's your first time) but hell no!  They were so mean about it.

Oh and the cash back bonus is so pathetic.  You only get 1/4 percent for every dollar you sign your purchases.  Yeah, I don't sign them all but it took me nearly 2 years to get $5!

Maybe you should go with Wells Fargo.

I have been really happy with Wells Fargo, I do have free online bill pay because of specifics with my account including one loan.

I have had the same problem with US Bank. if you use your debit card as a credit when making purcahse they can post them whenever they want. So, in theory, you could easily get assesed overdrafts if you miss something becasuse checks post overnight. If you checked your blance, say online, the next day everything could look very different. I'm not sure how this policy is legal, but I bet it makes them a ton of money

I think another thing US Bank does is work on a different time zone than West coasters.  So they can put overdraft charges on your account before you can even get inside your bank to deposit money!

I use US bank....maybe I'm missing something that the other women said, but when I check my balance online it will tell me how much money I have, and how much I have available. For example, I just checked my account a while ago, and it said that I actually have $300 more in my account than I have available to use. That's because some checks I deposited haven't cleared yet, and also because I've charged things on it (I can use my debit card as a Visa) that US bank is aware of, but for some reason haven't cleared to be taken out yet (I don't really know how that works). So I think I could charge up to the whole amount, that I actually have, but if I go over my available balance I'll start getting overdraft charges once those purhcases clear. In general, within minutes it will say online that I've made a purchase, and delete that amount from my "available balance", even though it might take a few days to be taken from my "account balance." So I haven't really been "tricked" by US Bank.

I hope this makes sense, I don't know how to say it clearer but I feel like I might have just been really confusing.

I have my credit card with US Bank and they've been pretty good. The customer service is always available and I'm not on hold for millions of years before I get to a rep. Other than that, my experience is a bit limited.

I bank with WF & it's the same - it takes at least a day for a deposit to become "available" & debit / credit charges are taken out immediately. I think that's pretty much an industry standard - if you float money you risk an overdraft.

I've been super pleased with WF - my DH's company is a corporate customer so we get additional benefits from that - you may check with them to see if your employer banks there.

Let me add one other good thing about WF. If a place messed up my debit or cc and charged it twice or an incorrect amount or something like that, I just email WF and they fix it immediately. Also, if I have a problem with something or don't know what some charge refers to, etc., I email the WF customer service and get a response back within the day. That's one thing I can say is really great about them.

I also have a cc with them (along with student loans) and in the past they've lowered my interest rate at my request a handful of times.

Just be careful of Wells Fargo - they are a known predatory lender. Meaning they target people who can't really afford or have the financial intelligence/understanding for loans and often those same people end up ruining their credit, defaulting on their loans and/or going bankrupt. If you want more info, I'll look it up for you. There's tons of press on it. Good luck - make a wise decision.

Hey Ritz,

I've been using Wells Fargo for about a year now and really like their services so far.  I had switched from TCF Bank (the other big bank in town, besides US Bank and Wells Fargo) because WF had better online banking.

I like WF because I can usually find a WF ATM machine, but the bad thing is they do charge a $2 fee for ATM withdrawals from machines that aren't their's (that's in addition to the $1.50-$2.50 that the machine charges).  TCF Bank allowed free atm withdrawals from other atms, and I am still a bit used to that.

Don't know much about US Bank, but if you go with WF, you can't go wrong.  You may want to see which bank has a branch closest to where you live.  Both banks have large branches in downtown Mpls.

Hope this helps!
