You can get the book Writer's Digest and see if you can find mags that accept unsolicited manuscripts. With books publishers, it can be difficult as sometimes you need an agent to get them to read the book/story. He could try a fiction contest as some publishers have those for unpub. writers. too. There's tons of info in Writer's Digest.

I am by no means an expert in publishing, but I second mirbear's Writer's Digest suggestion. I would think it would be easier to get published in a magazine first, and then jump into the book arena.

You can also buy Writer's Market 2006 at the bookstore. They have a lot of magazines, agents, etc.

From what I hear, it's basically impossible to get a book published (fiction) without getting an agent first.

My mom had always wanted to write a book for children, she has worked at the elementary school for 20+ years. Finally last year she wrote it and I did all of the illustrations. We are still following up with a few possibilties, people she has met that have their own small publishing businesses, but it is VERY difficult. She has met people that self published through Amazon.com and said it was alot cheaper than some of the other self publishers. We have been thinking about researching that also. The only bad thing about self publishing is getting your book distributed properly. Barnes and Noble has several books on getting children's books published. It is hard work, but tell him good luck and I hope it works out for him.
