The OC Season Finale *SPOILERS*
Permalink Closed

Okay - I knew Marissa was going to be the one that got killed because she wanted off the show, but I still found myself hoping the whole time that it wasn't true. Her "death" I think was poorly acted by her and it was kind of cheesy, but I almost started crying! I was so upset that this is how it was going to end. The episode as a whole was pretty good, it really didn't have too much going on.

I really didn't like how they were portraying that Marissa wasn't the college type. When the show first started she was an exemplary student and I felt that they sort of made it seem like she was always this troubled child.

Also, Marissa's sister really annoyed me. Her acting is just bad. I really felt bad for Julie that Marissa was leaving, but I'm glad they were leaving on good terms.

What did you ladies think?

I thought the episode was pretty good.  I actually felt myself tear up when Marissa died.  I knew it was coming, and I actually figured out that it would be Volchek that killed her, but I was still sad.  As much as she annoys me, I don't think it's good for a show, when one of the main characters die.  I also don't like how they are setting it up that Little Cooper will be there to take her place.

Since Marissa wanted off the show, i actually thought they would have her go work on the boat w/her dad - w/an open for her to come back.

All in all, it was good, but not much happened.  Next season will be interesting...

I knew marissa wanted off the show, but I didn't think that they would kill her. Now, there is no way she can return. I also thought, it was bad that they killed off a main character. Everything I read, was that Sandy was going to have a heartattack. Very weird. But other than that, last night was pretty good, it had a sad vibe throughout the show though. Does anyone know if the show is going to return? I know it lost a lot of viewers.

It will definitely be back in the Fall.  I read that Fox already renewed it and they showed scenes for next season last night.

I just read something at TV Guide.com's entertainment news column that Fox thinks killing Marissa will bring in viewers -- they quote the president (or someone high up) saying as much, and Mischa Barton as saying her character had been through so much and there was nothing left for her to do. Marissa annoyed me a lot but I was also a little sad watching her die, and also thinking back on how much better the show was when it started. It's too bad they left no opening for her to come back, even as a guest star from time to time.

Anyone else think that whenever a character gets killed off, they make the character more sympathetic at the last minute? Last night Marissa was being more likeable than usual, at least for me! I think having her sister trying to "rule Harbor" next year will be annoying.

eta: they started a trend with the season finale music -- last year ended with a song from Imogen Heap, and they did that again last night.

I thought the death scene was kind of corny and snickered when they did the montage with the different scenes of Ryan carrying Marissa but it was pretty sad. Marissa didn't annoy me that much but I never really cared about or was interested in her character.

Other than that I wasn't that into the finale. I am so sick of them having people get into trouble (e.g. Seth getting arrested, Sandy being investigated) just to create some drama, but then having it blow over right away. It just seems pointless. But Seth and Summer are still so cute together. And I'll always love Juju.
I am really interested to see what happens next season. I'm already cringing at the thought of Marissa's sister "ruling harbor" but I hope they focus on Sandy and Kirsten a lot. There are so many potentially good story lines that the developed early on and dropped in favor of stupid stuff like Kiki getting annoyed because Sandy was working a lot.

Scarlett - I didn't pick up on the Imogen Heap connection but the first season ended with Jeff Buckley's version of that song didn't it?

As usual, I agree with almost everything you said, cc...the Ryan Carries Marissa Montage was a little too much for me.  i mean, we get it.  i noticed the homage to previous episodes before they showed the clips, but i guess they don't think their viewers are smart enough to pick up on such things.  and Hallelujah is a good song and i like Imogen Heap, but i really wish they had used Into Dust instead to really harken back to the Tijuana overdose thing and the original Ryan-Marissa theme.  (that is, used the TJ music instead of TJ overdose montage)

however, i had not heard the leaked news that Mischa was leaving the show and i was still thinking about the previews they showed two weeks ago saying "one of these people MAY not survive the night!" and imagined that as usual, they'd give us a cliffhanger and everyone would be fine and dandy in the fall.  i guess i can't accuse them of pulling their punches anymore!  so even while watching the death scene, i didn't even think it was really gonna be true.  the whole time i was just thinking, boo hoo Marissa is dead, oh wait, no she's not, she'll wake up in the hospital next season.  Josh Schwartz has just become the boy who cried wolf.  i won't believe anything he shows me.

i was pretty bored and annoyed with the show this season so i'm not sure i'll even tune in next season (and i didn't even really like Marissa that much).  but it's supposedly going in a totally new direction...according to Josh Schwartz they will be "repopulating the high school" and you will "see a whole new generation through Kaitlin's eyes."  so i guess instead of doing the Kaitlin/boarding school spinoff show, they're just plopping it in the middle of the O.C. and pretending it's the same show.  lame.

okay, i've blabbered enough now...

oh, but also, apparently Mischa was trying to get fired by calling in sick all the time and being super late for work and stuff...so i wonder if they decided to kill her character instead of just sending her off on a boat to Greece so that she can't come back for guest spots, since she was being obnoxious and unprofessional at the end...

ETA one more thing...even though i wasn't heartbroken over Marissa being dead, how sad is it that Julie was happy finally?  she looked so so happy and content when she told Marissa goodbye, like she finally had both her daugthers back on good terms with her.    poor Juju, i love her.

1. I can't stand Mischa, but the way they killed her off seemed both melodramatic AND anticlimactic. She's been through so much crap in her life and then dies in a car accident (with no real visible injuries, incidentally)? And the Volchek storyline was lame.

2. I knew she was leaving -- I read it as a spoiler and I think the show set her up to go.

3. I honestly can't imagine the whole series will be based around Caitlin now, because we don't know any other characters her age.  She doesn't bug me any more than Mischa, though.

4. I loved the Hallelujah song (they played the Jeff Buckley version when Ryan left to be with Teresa, right?) and the flashbacks, but I am a cheeseball.

5. I see this series going in one of two directions: Saved By the Bell: The New Class or Saved By the Bell: The College Years.  Neither are good IMO.

Well, I'm not too sure if Marissa died.  If they showed a casket in the next season preview I would have believed it but until then I won't.

I think they had Marrissa's little sister coming home because what would the show be without high school drama, where else can the show go?

This is so embarssing, but I totally cried when Marissa died. In my defense, I had a little bit of a buzz on, so the cheesiness was totally emotional. The TJ fladhback, the flashback to the first time her met her, the music.

I was skeptical too, but I read the show update at fox.com and it said that she died. Since it was explicitly stated, and not "she passed out" or "didn't respond," I take it to mean she really did die.

Can't they make it the Seth and SUmmer show - they are my favorite part and I love seeing pictures of Rachel Bilson and Adam Brody in real life.

I would totally watch a spin off show of those two about their life in RI.

i'm really annoyed/pissed that they killed her.  i really dont want to have anything to do with the show anymore.  i never even really liked her character all that much, and thought mischa was a poor actress.  i do think though that her character was taken in the completely wrong direction too- yea she was troubled, but she's supposed to be this "perfect" girl of newport- i feel like they just kinda put her in bad storylines and isolated her.  i liked when she decided to go to the bonfire in her college sweatshirt- i think she looked really cute and happy.  I wish they showed more storylines with her and her peers at her old school- other than ryan, seth, summer, and taylor.  Also, its hard for me to look back on season one (the best one) and not think, oh well, she died anyway.  I've always kinda felt bad for marissa, and i def. like her clothes the best and like watching her on screen because i think she's really pretty, even when i am slightly giggling at her acting.  I think she's important to the chemistry of the show, and contrary to popular opinion, summer and seth are cute and i'd like them in real life, but they totally bore me on the screen.  i think knowing they are dating in real life makes it boring to me- like this affects the writers and makes them keep them happy and in love.  Also, i dont feel like dealing with greiving next season, or her dumb sister to take over newport.  BLAHHHHH- this still kind of upsets me.  it ruined the show for me.

And maybe they could move here and I could be their IRL friend. Here's to wishing...

I don't want to watch Caitlin "rule Harbor" so I'm not sure if I'll watch next season. I didn't read any spoilers or anything, but I knew that Marissa was going to leave. I felt like they'd been bringing Caitlin in to slowly take her place for awhile now. I thought they'd just leave it at her leaving to work on the boat, but then Ryan got the car and said he wanted to drive her to the airport. That's when I knew she would die on the way. I sort of wish it would have been less predictable. Poor Julie... her life was finally the way she wanted it to be, and now this.

What!?? They killed off one of the main characters?? Wow. I don't really watch the show, didn't see the finale, but occasionally I've flipped over to watch the show. How did she die? What happened? What I miss?
