While I totally love fashion and design, I am so NOT into decorating my place. I live with my boyfriend and are place is pretty boring. We have the basics, but have basically no decorations to speak of. I just really don't care to spend the money, time, effort into decorating our place (we rent). My mom thinks I'm so weird because I dont' hang photos or put rugs everywhere..or whatever...but I just don't care.
I spend most of my money on my appearance (hair, clothes, nails, etc.) and the rest on having fun...I'm yet to feel any real motivation to spend it decorating or buying nice stuff for the house.
I feel your pain...although I do have some pictures hanging up, I feel like my place is still like a college kids place (although I own it). I haven't bought that much new furniture (I got some hand me downs from my parents) and I feel clueless about how to even start decoratating. I think my problem is that house stuff is so expensive that I feel like I must love it forever to purchase it. And I have real problems doing that.
And I'm like you in that I spend most of my spending money on clothes and entertainment rather than house things.
I'm kinda like that... I like to decorate but my bf doesn't care so our apartment is pretty boring. I'm trying to change, but I'm definitely not into spending a ton of money on my apartment.
I guess I'm kinda like that too right now, but a lot of it is because I rent and I know I won't be living in my apartment forever. It's kinda blah post collegiate IKEA and while I like home things and love going to home stores, at this point in my life I'd rather spend money on clothes and entertainment. Also, I feel like furniture is soooo expensive and I have a lot of trouble committing to one central idea to decorate my house with.
I probably will put more effort into my next place since my BF and I plan on buying a place in the next 5 years or so (or whenever the real estate market in SoCal starts to bust, whichever comes first).
that's really funny, because i was thinking the same thing last night. i think because of the pics i posted of me, and here i am in a bedroom that looks like crap. but i rent too, and my place is really tiny (it's a house, but it's the world's smallest house) and i just can't do what i'd like to so instead i do nothing. and buy shoes.

I don't decorate. We've rented since we've been married and I guess I just don't want to put a lot of time/money/effort into something that I know is just temporary. We bought a house though (we're closing on the 26th) and I've been planning my living room. Now that I have a space that can be considered permanent, I'm much more into making it my own.
I'm similar because what I most enjoy spending my disposable income on is clothes, clothes, and more clothes! Even more so than shoes, and I'm even stingy with money when it comes to purses, but with clothes I spend like crazy. Soooo, I have been really slow with decorating my home. We bought it about 2 1/2 years ago and we have finally fully furnished downstairs and put crown molding up, but the crown molding needs to be painted and so do the walls (they're a creamy color the builder used). It took us a good year before we started hanging stuff on the walls; we were just scared to mess it up but it all worked fine. Upstairs we haven't furnished any of the rooms except a partially furnished office. We do use really nice stuff though so we take our time to buy it. This year we were finally gonna buy a nice MB set, but instead we're spending a ton of money on a new showroom so the house isn't gonna get anything big new this year.
All my friends and relatives got tons and tons of stuff for their homes when they got married so you can always wait til that happens!
it is because I rent and I know I won't be living in my apartment forever.
We live in a house but I feel the same way. I haven't done much but I kind of feel like it's throwing money away. We have lived here for like 5 years so I guess that's really bad. I've always had stuff on the walls in the living room but that's about as far as it goes. I was planning on painting etc this spring but I think we are going to buy a house in the next year so I just haven't. I did however put up border in my kitchen and bathroom.

i love love decorating...i go through phases where i'd rather buy a cool lamp then a new shirt. But i really like collecting strange old things- so i go to flea markets or raid my parents house to find things that are really personal and meaningful to me. i prefer my environments to be personal and odd as opposed to pottery barn presentable, so its not too expensive and its more of an extension of my style as opposed to merely interior decorating. Both can be done on a budget though- so if you want to start decorating, maybe start slowly and see if its worth it to you.
Oh no. I felt the same way for a long time. I don't think I had the right apartment. Now, I have a place with a bar/buffet in the kitchen...that's all one needs, right? J/K. My sis & her husband used to have the same problem. They lived in NY, and then Atlanta, etc..and it is so spendy therem so not much left for spending on decorations. If your boyfriend is at all handy, make him go to Home Depot, buy some pine boards and make some furniture, if you need it (and if he is handy, impt!) And then paint it. If you have a home that is yours, paint one wall one color just to go a bit crazy & do something different. Throw a couple pics up on the wall in cute frames...it won't cost much at all. Or if it's just decorations, you can find great stuff anywhere. Check Ebay, Check Pier One (sales, sales), Overstock.com, you can find something cool for your house. You can just pick up stuff now & then and eventually you'll have decorations & you'll have your style all over your home!
I never used to put much thought into decorating until we moved in to this house. In a rental, it just seemed pointless, and we knew we weren't staying in our first house, so again, I didn't do much. But I do like decorating, so it was great fun when we bought this house, which we plan to stay in for a long time.
