Okay, so I started getting Shape when I knew nothing about fitness. Now, I basically just read it for makeup tips and recipes. Anyhow, twice it said women should use light weights to "tone" muscles. Okay, there is no such thing as "tone." A muscle either grows or shrinks. I don't know who came up with this word but it's such a stupid notion.

Secondly, I'm reading in Elle that women should use 5 lbs weights. Okay, next they're gonna say I should only use the pastel pink weights. No wonder no one outside the fitness world knows whats going on-these people are idiots. What's worse, some professor of kineiology says yoga and pilates lengthens muscles. Ummm, anatomically, your bicep goes from your elbow to your shoulder, nothing can lengthen it, that's just impossible.  Later, a trainer recommends to lose 5 lbs fast, women should go on juice fasts even though it may cause bad breath, headaches, breakouts, and insomnia. Is it really worth it? C'mon....

Okay, my vent is over. I'm just constantly amazed by the lack of knowledge so called "experts" have. Millions of people read this garbage and eat it up too. No wonder America is so overweight.

Vent away Jen.  I enjoy your posts on here about fitness because I do learn things and think you are very knowledgeable.  I wish I could afford a gym right now so I could use your tips but all I have for now is my apartment gym with a treadmill, bike, and elliptical.

Oh a side note, do you think the exercises they put in magazines are any good?  I get Self which I really enjoy and they show exercises with hand weights every month.  Would those exercises help me firm up in addition to the cardio I do?  Cause I definetly see your point of doing all the cardio in the world isn't going to help lose the weight I want to lose.

I think certain movements are good. Look for compound movements though (movements which use more than 1 muscle group). I've taken moves out of magazines to use in my fitness classes before but I have one problem with a reoccuring theme I see in these magazines.

They try to do moves that are too showy. Like, they'll have a lunge and add a twist with bicep curls or something stupid like that. That brings the focus off of the lunge which was a perfectly good exercise before they wanted to make it look cool by adding an ab twist and biceps. You cannot use the heaviest weight you could have because you're doing crazy moves. They may look cool but traditonal moves are better: push-up, squat, back rows, etc.

And.....stayed tuned for June's article, I've been doing a lot of research! (It'll go deeper into what I'm talking about here).

oh, Jen, I am so glad you brought it up!
Seriously, lifting 5 lb weights doesn't really do anything to me, I completely agree with you. Some thing about the"toning" part.

The other thing that annoys me is that they contadict themselves sooo often! I know research proceeds fast, and sometimes comes up with results that contradict what was accepted in the past. But saying 2 opposite things within 10 pages of the same mag, come on!

Thanks Jen for the advice!  Sadly though I can only lift 5 pounders right now (I'm so out of shape) but I promise to work my way up to heavier weights!

Do keep up with your tips Jen, I also learn a lot from your posts.

Real quick is it possible for me to get my arms in shape ( more importantly the tricep area) in four weeks. I waited to long to get ready for a June 10th wedding, thats what I get for being lazy, and doing the whole: "I'll start tommorow" speech.

You can see a difference in four weeks. Eat clean (egg whites, veggies, plain oatmeal, protein shakes....fun huh?) and lift heavy, and do HIIT twice a week. The diet will shave off fat to view the muscle and the HIIT and weights will help with calories and build muscle.
