Ok, I know this is like the broadest question ever but.....
My mom, sister, and I are headed to NYC next week. It's my second time to go, the first time I didn't get to do a lot of shopping, and I plan on making up for it this time....SOOOO...where do I need to go? Kari told me about H&M and Century 21 and of course we'll go by Saks, Bloomies, Macy's and maybe a peek into Bergdorfs, but where else are absolute musts? My sister is really interested in going to at least one thrift store...also, is Brooklyn worth a day trip? I've heard good things about Williamsburg...
Thanks for the help!

I'm going in a couple of weeks and here are some places from my itinerary(I'm a planning nerd)
Nolita area: Foley & Corinna, Miu Miu, Mayle, INA, and Lolli West Village: Magnolia Bakery, Elizabeth Charles, Albertine, Zachary's Smile Thrift stores on 17th and 23rd Hell's Kitchen Flea Market Lush on Broadway The Adidas store in Soho for vintage style sneakers for the boy and also A.P.C because I'm curious to try their denim
I suppose it depends on what you are looking for and what kind of experiences you want but I would say for department stores do Barneys, Bendel and Bergdorf and then either Saks, Bloomingdales or Macys. They have done a lot of renovations in Macy's so it looks nicer than it used to but most of the time the place is a wreck and the only reason I ever go there is because they have really good shoe sales, but it's all pretty standard stuff that you can find elsewhere.
fairlight listed the good thrift store streets. On 23rd street around 3rd avenue there is the City Opera Thrift Shop, Housing Works, maybe one other nicer thrift store and a Salvation Army. On West 17th-18th there is another Housing Works, Angel Street and one or two non-thrift vintage stores (Fisch for the Hip and another that I can't remember the name of). Also further west on 17th is Find Outlet which is and awesome tiny store with discounted boutique brands and on 7th avenue and 17th there is Loehmann's. Just be warned that most thrift and vintage stores in Manhattan aren't really cheap. You might have better luck with that in Brooklyn. There's a huge used clothing store called Beacon's Closet in Williamsburg and a Buffalo Exchange recently opened a store there too. You can just take the L train to the first stop in Brooklyn - Bedford Avenue, where there are lots of little stores and restaurants.
I can't really think of any other shopping musts. In addition to the main midtown/5th avenue shopping I would the other good shopping areas are - Meatpacking District, East Village, Soho/Nolita, and the Lower East Side.
Also if you have time you might want to check out some sample sales. You can find listings on
Thanks for the help girls...and my mom and sister thank you too...my dad on the other hand..well, he's not real pleased that we've got the down low on NYC shopping...
I'm so excited to hit as many of those places as I can!!!
thanks again.

Don't forget the sample sales. Leigh Bantivoglio, tibi, hollywould and goldenbleu are having a joint sample sale next week. I've had great luck at the hollywould and leigh b. sales. Usually the sale is just rebecca taylor and Leigh B.
The email I got said prices are 75% off and all new merchandise, no samples.
