pumps & button-downs for my new job
Permalink Closed

I start my (very new and exciting) magazine internship this week, so tonight I went through everything I have trying to find the most business-y outfits I could come up with (I've worked at a salvage yard and from home all my life, so you can imagine that my nicer wardrobe hasn't been updated lately). But I'm having trouble with some of the basics!

In the past few months I've definitely gained weight, and my bra cup size has gone up considerably, however my band size has stayed the same and I now wear a 34DD (I know this might be TMI but it's important to my question...) The button-downs I have in my closet "pucker" now at the bust. I could wear a shell underneath and unbutton that button, but on days when it's sweltering or when I have to look extra-nice, that won't be an option I know. All the blouses I've tried on recently that fit my bust, though, are humongous around my middle and that looks just as awful. Does anyone know of a brand/store where I could find something that could accomodate a large bust, but not make me look like a tent?

Also, I realized while wearing my only brown pumps to church the other day, that I can't stand them for even a few hours because they pinch my toes. Can anyone recommend a comfortable brown pump I could wear in an office environment? I may have to do a bit of walking so I need someting that won't kill me at the end of the day. I'd kind of like it to be a bit plain because I'll be wearing them a lot and would want them to be a little unnoticeable. I would also like them to have about a 3 inch heel because I think a higher heel would look better with my pencil skirts. I know I can find shoes on Zappos, etc by putting in my requirements, but I was hoping perhaps someone had a suggestion based on experience because I'll be wearing these a lot, and would hate to spend $50 on shoes that will pinch me all summer!

I know this was long, but I thank you in advance if you can give me suggestions!

p.s. bonus points if suggestions won't cost me an arm and a leg, I'm taking a significant income cut by taking this internship part time instead of staying at my current job full time, so I'll be on a bit of a budget for a few months :)

I would go with something that blends with your skin so they go with everything.  I searched beige and neutral, assuming you are caucasian (please forgive my assumption if you are not.) Also in regard to comfortable 3" heels - it's a crapshoot - I would buy some insoles if you need more padding.  I also looked for thicker heels that are easer to walk in. I found a lot there were above your price limit ($50), but here are some finds from from zappos:

$39.99 - rsvp (they look like they would be easy to walk in)

rsvp Bethan

$51.95 Gabriella Rocha

Gabriella Rocha Calida

now, I really like these, but they are a little above your limit $64.95, Tribeca

Tribeca Get Together

no suggestions for the shirts - I have the same problem.  do you sew? would you be able to get shirts that fit you in the bust and do some home tailoring to nip in the waist?

For the "puckering" problem with your button-downs, you may want to simply sew in some velcro in between the bottons.  This really works!  I have the same problem.  That way you may not need to buy new ones.  Also play around with different bras-some hold you together more than others.

You may also want to try Banana Republic-I heard they were going to do bra size sizing on dress shirts but I don't know that for sure.

I was also going to suggest BR. I haven't tried them, but there are shirts with fuller busts. I just checked the website though and I don't see them anymore.

I BR button downs.  I have a 34D and they don't pucker on me at all.  I wear just the normal button down from there.  They did have some called fuller bust and they were on sale on the website a few weeks ago.  I'm not sure if they are going to keep making them or not or even if they were that much different than their regular ones.  I would definetly try them out though.  I won't wear any other brand.

As far as shoes go I have no idea.  Everything I buy rubs my feet and pinches my toes.  I just learn to deal.  Nine West haven't been too horrible on my feet so maybe try the ninewest outlet.  they were having a buy one get one 50% off sale 2 weeks ago.  I'm sure its still going.

I agree wit hBanan for shirts. They seem to be cut with more room in the chest and are a decent price.

For shoes, I don't have time to look right now, but try seychelles for comfort. they are be far the most comfy cheap(er- usually around $80) that I've found.

I'm glad to hear there are actually button downs that fit a larger chest because I gave up on it when my bust line grew. I guess my question is - do you have to wear button downs? I find that stretchy / silky material tees or tank & cardigan look professional as well. Target usually has the tees & I often paired that with a 3/4 sleeve blazer or cardigan in the summer for a professional look. Kind of like a sweater twin set but not "matchy" to avoid the soccer mom look. I guess my point is that I don't think you need a button down to look professional - then you don't have to fight the boob issue.

Target has this called a "suiting tee" & it comes in lots of colors

With something like this:

For more comfortable shoes you could try Aerosoles or Naturalizer - they may not be 3 inch heels since I think it's a pretty tall order to find 3 inch shoes that are comfy that aren't wedges. Also, the $50 max - if you could go to $70 you would open your options SO much - and trust me, I understand budget, but it may be worth it to spend an extra $20 or so if you can find something comfortable & you know you are going to wear them a lot. I can't help with "unnoticeable" shoes since I usually dress around an outrageous pair of shoes so they will stand out.

thanks for your suggestions (and sorry it took so long to respond! my internet has been completely bonkers all day)... I'll definitely have to try BR, my cousin works there so maybe I could even get a discount! I'm glad to hear that some of you have had success there!

I didn't meant to say that $50 was my limit, I just picked a number out of my head...basically I just meant that since I'll only be able to buy one or two pair of shoes with my budget, I wouldn't want to waste any amount of money on shoes that would hurt, if I could help it. I'm comfortable in 3 inch heels, but it's the rest of the shoe that always kills me - the toes etc.

I know that button downs aren't the only option to look professional, but with as hot as it gets here I don't know that I could pull off a cardigan or anything... I'm already dreading wearing a cami under a white dress shirt, because I don't know if I'll be able to bear two layers!

Thank you thank you for your ideas... I start on Wednesday (!) so maybe I'll be able to see what kind of clothing the (few) other women wear before I go shopping this weekend or something...wish me luck!
