Utah Address Question
Permalink Closed

I have a relative in Utah I'm going to need to send a wedding invitation to, and I'm not sure how to write their address correctly.

You're supposed to spell everything out when addressing wedding invites (East instead of E. etc), but I wanted to see if anyone knew the correct way to write this one because it's weird and I don't want to make assumptions .....

(not their real address )

999 E 4217 S
Town, UT 12345

See what I mean with the separate 'E' and 'S' in their addy line?  Would this be correct then?:

999 East 4217 South
Town, Utah 12345

I feel kind of stupid typing it now but I'm not from Utah so I don't know if it's some special Utah thing or what ..... having two directional specifications seems weird nonetheless .... how is that different than SE?

I am no expert but I say to spell out both directions, like this:  999 East 4217 South.

I have had address like this:  East 999 South 4217, so it looks a little weird to see the number before the direction, but I think it is the same thing.  A lot of the more rural suburbs have address like this, at least where I am from.

My dad lives in Utah. He usually writes it out this way: 999 South 4217 East.

Thank you!

So the actual street name must be 4217 South?  Why would anywhere do that?!

It's kind of confusing, but as I recall, the street names are actually like that.  i.e. West 4200 South would be a street name. I have no idea why it's done this way.

I deal with all kinds of wierd addresses like that where I work. I think it has to do with the direction the street lays. You did have it correct though, you should spell out like this

999 East 4217 South

Believe it or not there are addresses out there that are like "1 block south of the post office and 2 blocks east"  how funny that we are in the year 2006 and addresses like that still exsist lol.

Either way is correct. The E refers to how many blocks East of the Temple they are and the S refers to how many South. So, in your example above, they are 9 blocks east adn 42 blocks south. Its weird - but I can tell you - you'll never get lost in SLC! If you want to PM me I can explain further. My parents have lived there for 15 years. Good luck with the wedding!
