rates for babysitting

hello everyone. i have a question about babysitting and how much you pay or get paid. i am considering helping out a mom who is a friend of a friend. she has a 3 yr old boy, 2 yr old girl and is pregnant and due very soon w/another boy. she is looking for someone to basically be another set of hands 3-4 days a week, about 6-8 hours a day. for the most part, she will be there (from what i understand) she just wants someone to be there in case she needs to run errands, or take one kid somewhere so she can leave the others w/me. so...anyway, my question is how much do you think i should charge. i am 24 years old and i have been babysitting on and off since i was a teen. nothing full time like this, so i just don't want to ask for too much or get underpaid. so, what do you think? thanks in advance:) jj

I have 2 teenage girls that I use for my daughters, ages 2 and 5.  I pay $6/hour for the two of them.  I would charge at least that, especially when the baby comes.  Maybe $9 for all 3?  It depends where you live, too.  $6 would probably be too low in a big city.

Hmmm.. this is a little bit tricky b/c you don't want to gouge the mom, but likewise you don't want to sell yourself short.

What part of the country do you live in? If you live in a big city where good childcare help is hard to find, then you can charge more.  What do you think the mom can afford? I assume you'll be paid off the books (in cash), which would make it easier for you both.

I'd say $15-$20/hr. I don't think that's too steep considering you're caring for at least 2, possibly all 3 children, even if she is there.

well i live about 45min north of atlanta. i honestly think the mom can afford at least $15 an hour...b/c her husband actually wants a live-in nanny...someone to help her all the time...but she doesn't want that...so i think this is their compromise. i don't know...i may have sold myself short though b/c i told her $10-$13 an hour...but now i'm thinking i should have asked for more....anyway...keep the opinions coming, i greatly appreciate it!! jj

At the very least $10

When I doing some babysitting, I was making $10 an hour -- and that was about 12 years ago. This was in the middle of nowhere in VT, if that helps. I think $15 is a good amount to ask for, especially for the # of kids!

Yeah I agree it is normally $10 for one kid and then like additional $5 per kid.

Are you getting paid under the table? Or will youhave to pay taxes?

Also, where do you live?

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and my mom does childcare for a family part-time. I believe she charges $25 an hour if she has to pay taxes, and then $15-20 if it is under the table.

I babysit one child...usually no more than 2-3 hours at a time...and I am getting $20 an hour.  My situation is the same as yours...half the time the mom is there, she just needs to run errands and doesn't always want to haul the kid around...or she just wants her own downtime.

I would say since there are already two kids, and once the baby comes you will be more needed...I wouldn't go below $15 an hour.

There are a few places around here that advertise for $9/hour for one kid and $2/hour each additional kid.  I am in Oklahoma City, OK.
