eye exam cost?
Permalink Closed

I know this topic has come up before, but I need help! I'm down to my last pair of contacts because I've procrastinated so I need an exam and new prescription. I have no idea where to go down here. I called lenscrafters to ask about pricing (I have no vision coverage and am kind of broke right now) and the guy who answered the phone was just like "um, i don't know." And apparently it was too much work for him to find out.

So, where should I go and how much should I expect to spend? I need a deal!! Ideally I'd get glasses and contacts (my glasses are like 8 years old and I can barely see out of them anymore. Plus they're cracked. ) but at minimum, I need an exam and contacts. Ugh, of course this would happen the same week that I need to pay for my class and buy freaking $400 computer software....

Try Costco.  We just did eye exams there and they were $79 which included contact fitting and glasses prescription (if you wanted).  Costco's contacts are reasonable too.

hmm, I'll call and see if that would be the price down here. I'm not a member, but if it's tht cheap it might be better off to just buy a membership and do that! I found one place that told me $120 for just the exam, and that's the best that I can find...

eta: I called and it's $79. I'll probably end up doing that then. For 10 bucks more (actually, i could convince DH to do the 50$ membership out of joint money, so *I* would save a lot ) , I'd get a costco membership and probably be able to buy the contacts for cheaper. Did you happen to notice if the frames they sold look decent?

Dunno where you are but I am in So Cal and my family has always gone to Chinese optomoetrists with their own practices/stores.  They're really good deals - so maybe if you're near a chinatown try cehcking around there.  I don't wear contacts anymore (had Lasik) but just went a couple of weeks ago for an exam.

My exam (no prescription) $49

Sister got 1 yr supply of disposable (2 week) contacts) $259 (i think) + $100 mail in rebate.

I ended up going to costco and it was a great deal!! The doctor was awesome and I wassuper impressed. I got a year's contacts for $70 and liked their frame selection better (and cheaper) than the other stores I looked at. So for just under $300 I got the exam, a year of contacts, and glasses.

I really have no idea about this so you would have to check it out yourself, but you know how dentistry schools are pretty cheap if you let a student (overseen by a pro, of course!) give you a check-up? Maybe medical schools let you do that for opthamology students?
