IUD- Pain?
Permalink Closed

I have my appointment to have my IUD insertion at 3 today, and I wanted to find out if anyone here has had it done, and if so what kind of pain can I expect from the insertion?

Thanks!

It's pretty bad for about 60 seconds or so - painful but doable.  I'd take 3 or 4 ibuprofen beforehand to dull it a bit.

Good luck!

Thank you so much Elle!  I needed to hear the "doable" part...it's been freaking me out a little bit that they tell you to take all the ibuprofen beforehand...

not to hijack this thread - but elle, do you/did you have the copper-t or mirena?

i am thinking of getting the copper one...(even though i hear it can make periods heavier, i *really* don't want more bc hormones. they make me totally batshit (crazy).

I actually decided to hold off on getting one myself for now - The doc I saw hasn't inserted too many of them and so far her childless patients (only about 6 so far) have had problems and have had to have them removed.  I'd like someone a little more experienced!  Also, they are currently developing an IUD especially for childless women - it's smaller and more flexible, therefore making it easier to insert and less likely to cause cramping, etc.  It's not too far off, so if a baby is still a while off when it comes out I'll get that one.

They pretty strongly recommend against the copper one for childless women, because there's a higher risk of puncture.  The hormones in the Mirena are supposed to circulate locally only, though some women can feel a difference hormonally so who knows.  If you're sensitive to the hormones in BC pills, you might be more sensitive to the ones in an IUD ...?  Almost all the mothers I know who have one are VERY happy though!

*Update* IUD- Pain?
Permalink Closed

I know some people were considering IUDs, so I can now update with my experience of having it inserted...

First of all, I had a total b*tch of a nurse (not my usual one) who had me crying by the time I got home.  I won't go into all of that, but basically she kept ranting about how she never would have recommended one for me, how painful and awful it is, etc, etc.

The procedure itself wasn't tooooo awful.  There was a brief (~30 seconds) period of intense cramping, but no worse than some cramps I've had with my period.  Sorry for the really gross detail, but I was most scared of when she used clamps to hold my cervix in place.  But that didn't hurt that badly.  I had cramping all day yesterday, but it was bearable.  I have lower back aching today.  But it didn't keep me up at night, and I'm functional today.

Now the big question:  Would I go through it again?  Probably not.  The nurse has scared the shit out of me with all the possible complications, and it's also a very uncomfortable procedure.  I'm going to stick it out for a few months and see how I feel, and then I'll feel better either encouraging or discouraging women to get one.

Oh, and I've never had children, been pregnant, etc...

I'm sorry you had a bitchy nurse!  So much for bedside manner .  She really should have kept her personal opinion to herself!  Grrrrrrrrrrrr!  If it were me I'd probably call the office and put in a complaint about the She-devil nurse, but I'm a bitch, so ....

Anyway, glad you lived to tell the tale!  I would appreciate any updates on your experiences if you care to share .

I am planning on putting in a complaint about the nurse, because she was extremely unproffesional...

I'll definitely do updates!  I know that when I was making the decision it would have been nice to hear personal experiences, rather than all the statistics and promotional materials.  But for now I can tell you why I chose IUD...

I've been on and off birth control for the past 8 or 9 years, and in the beginning it was great.  No side effects, remembered to take it all the time, etc.  But about 4 or 5 years ago I went back on the pill and I had extreme breast tenderness, depression, low sex drive (sorry for TMI), weight gain (I know that's not supposed to be linked to BC anymore, but it does stem from depression), and just general ickiness.  I was also having a harder time remembering to take it.  Anyway, for years no one would discuss alternatives with me.  They insisted on giving me BC pills.  Finally a few months ago my nurse at Kaiser suggested the IUD, said it's probably my best option.  So I did my reading, thought about it, and here I am.  Of course now I'm REALLY second guessing myself because of the nurse I had yesterday.  So I'll update in a few months about whether I've decided to keep it!

Not only was that nurse extremely unprofessional, her opinion is also pretty old-school.  There are multiple studies now suggesting that IUDs are just as acceptable for childless women as they are for mothers.  The actual risk for complications is nearly the same - the difference is mostly in how comfortable the women find them, and childless women are more likely to have them removed because of problems with cramping.  Just because something wasn't widely accepted when she went through nursing school X years ago doesn't mean things haven't changed!

Besides, at the end of the day it's your body and therefore you get to make the final medical decision.  You have to be an informed healthcare consumer - most people who rely solely on doctors and nurses for their medical information are usually the ones that get the short end of the stick.  The medical professionals that you see are there to facilitate your care and to advise you, not to make decisions for you.  More power to you for doing your research and coming to your own decision!
