How do you respond when someone says that to you? Do you have a different response when the question is being asked out of genuine concern, as opposed to a snide insult?

A woman I work with (who is very nice and isn't snide) said I looked tired this morning. I don't feel particularly tired, and I thought I looked ok.

Maybe I just need better concealer.

Someone told me that recently, too. He said "For a young person, you sure do have dark circles under your eyes!"

Well, he is obviously a d*ck, especially since I just got off an international flight.

Anyway, as soon as I got back to the states, I rushed to the Kiehl's counter!!

The Kiehl's counter person said concealer was the best way to go.

Did you eat some really salty food or something?

I have a friend who gets a puffy face from being bloated after eating really salty stuff.  People ask if she's tired or if she's been crying.  So maybe it's just something like that?

If the lady is usually nice, I wouldn't worry about it.  It's not worth it.  She was probably just concerned.

If someone's concerned, I just humor them and say, "Yeah, I didn't get much sleep" etc etc.

If someone's just being a jerk, I just give them the look, or say, "Thanks, so I guess I look like crap."  Baahhh.  I hate it when people say that.

Every time I've been asked that- I have been tired so I just reply with "that's because I am". If someone asked when I wasn't tired I probably would be offended. As far as the guy saying that after you got off a flight- I probably would have just given some sarcastic remark about how brilliant he was for noticing lol.

I got the "you look like you have really bad allergies!" Ummm thanks? I was actually feeling great!

I usually just ignore it though or I say "Thanks!!"

I get this a lot - dark circles are in my genes. When I was younger, I was working for this horrific company as a receptionist, and one of the executives had my supervisor sit me down and tell me that I often look tired at work, that I have dark circles under my eyes, and that I need to take "extra care" to make sure I am well-rested when I come to work!?! It was mortifying. Meanwhile I was barely surviving on that little bit of money they were paying me. It was all I could do to keep from saying that I am tired b/c I'm up all night worrying about making ends meet.

Anyway, lately I just resorted to saying, "Well, I'm not tired, I guess I just look like crap! Thanks for pointing it out." But my current coworkers are some of the rudest and most socially retarded people I have ever met, so I don't really care if I upset them.

ETA: The day before I was told to take extra-care, I had worn a white, lightweight button-down that had little red flowers on it from J. Crew. It was the first time I had worn it, and I thought it would be a new work staple. My supervisor told me that the executive commented that my blouse looked like a pajama top and that I shouldn't wear it to work again.

I wouldn't think too much of it. It's happened to everyone, but I think that a lot of times it's because people wear shirts that are in a color that can wash their face out. There are certain colors I just cannot wear by my face because it makes me look like I'm dead. Maybe you were wearing a color that isn't the best for you?

I always get, "you look upset" "something wrong"?  Um no!  Not like you really care or it's your business in the first place.  Why should I have to wear a smile ALL DAY long!  You can be happy with a straight face, you don't have to show everybody!  One of my supervisors had the nerve to say that if have problems at home, I should leave them at home!  How F-ing rude!  Did I look beat up or crying, I don't think so!  Not everybody is fake perky all the time, that doesn't mean you have problems.
