okay so stella mccartney is debuting a line of handbags this fall. the cool thing is she doesn't use any leather at all. those of you who are familar with her will know that she's super pro-animal rights, and apparently she turned down tom ford's job at gucci b/c she would've had to  use leather to make the accessories.

of late i've been reading blurbs about her accessory line in a bunch of magazines. my question is how much would you pay for a stella bag?

i'm curious b/c obvs there's the status involved with a designer bag. but there's also the issue of craftmanship and the quality of the goods. i'm sure those of you who own pricey bags can attest to the fact that the leather is superb, but these bags aren't leather, so in my mind they should cost less. but i'm n/s that will be the case, especially since her shoes which aren't leather, are the same price as most designer shoes, i.e. $400+

here are some pics of the bags

honestly, I think her shoes should cost around $300ish...the quality is there, but there's no reason to charge the amounts she does for mostly, vinyl, cloth and wood.

With that in mind, I wouldn't be surprised if her stuff starts around $500 and goes to $1000+. I personally think the price range should be more like $300 - 500.

I would pay a decent amount for one, assuming that the craftsmanship was good. And I think other people would too-- after all, they pay a lot for Gucci fabric bags with not much leather on them, or for LV monogram or damier canvas bags which also only have a bit of leather.

My first thought was that I wouldn't pay over $500 for one. I mean, yes it's Stella McCartney, but it's still a vinyl bag. Then I read uesgirl's post and she got me thinking. Now I'm not so sure. I agree with Lilykind... I think they'll go to above $1000 easily.

i know in the past the gucci group (who owns the stella mccartney brand) hasn't gone nutso over accessories and also worried when she was debuting shoes (some models do have a leather sole btw!!!) that they wouldn't sell well b/c of the no animal hides thing. also at chloe accessories sales skyrocketed when she left there...

i don't know.. b/c it's like what's the big deal about leather? are you questioning durability? because vinyl will probably look the same for a 100 years. or is it just that you feel the cost of materials is less so you feel like you shouldn't be paying as much?

i guess i'm just rambling.... but i guess what i'm saying is i am not as concerned with materials as i am concerned with longevity. i never buy satin shoes even though they are killer because they just would just not look nice after 1 wear... but these stella bags will probably long time. my concern would be their style and whether i would get sick of it after a while... so yeah i wouldn't pay more than $500 but i agree with lilykind and think their range will probably be more like $600-1200.

So glad you posted this! I was thinking about this when I saw the write-up on her accessories line in Bazaar this month.

Personally, I would pay $400 for her shoes. Some of the ones I've seen thus far have been very, very cute. And, I think there are durable and cute alternatives for shoes when it comes to non-leather, and I'm always frustrated that more non-leather shoes aren't made. The shoes I have that are all man-made have held up really, really well.

On the other hand, the non-leather handbags I have that have been made out of leather-like material have never held up well. So I wouldn't pay a lot for a pleather handbag. Like seriously not a lot -- under $200 even for a designer. (Which we all know would never happen.) But, I would (theoretically ... were I the sort of person who had this sort of money to toss around) pay up to $600-$700 for a fabric Stella bag if it were unbelievably cute and I thought it would be a classic.

Mind you, I think I'm also willing to pay more across the board b/c I think Stella has done a lot to raise awareness about animal rights and to show that couture can be animal friendly, and I'm willing to shell out some extra cash to support her on it.

ETA: I can't believe I just used the phrase "mind you" in all seriousness. Who *am* I?!?!

That last bag looks so cool!  I loveee nice leather (i actually do feel guilty about it,  I go to leather shops often and just look at leather i like), but I don't think that it should really matter for cost.  If it holds up and is classic enough to warrant the price, why not?  I don't think LVs are leather, are they (other than their handles)?  People spend major money on those.  I have a coated canvas vintage gucci bag- love it, and much more durable then my leather bags.  I think people are willing to pay for name and status.
