Dying clothes?
Permalink Closed

Does anyone have any experience with dying clothes? Here's my issue. I love this skirt....

It comes in white and black. I already have three white skirts. I hate black. Could I buy it in white and dye it something else? Would this process be ridiculously easy? I'm awful at crafts.

I'd say no. I've only used Rit Dye to freshen faded colors or something like that. Frankly, it works okay at best. I personally wouldn't want to spend money on a brand new piece and get it all spotch dyed by a home dye job.

I'm not sure if a tailor or someone could do a better job though. I suppose it would be worth a telephone call.

Good to see you on the boards again Maddie. I don't think I've seen you on much lately.

I would be hesitant on dying a new item as well. Is there something similar in a different color I wonder?

I've never dyed clothing before but I've heard that the color can run onto whatever else you're wearing w/the dyed article of clothing.

I wouldn't do it -- the color can come out uneven and if the thread that it is sewn together with has polyester in it (which is very common -- to give it more strength), it won't dye as dark as the cotton will and you'll have contrasting stitching. I use to try to dye clothing (in high school) and it never turned out well. Sorry to be a downer.

if you're still set on it, i've never done it before so i can't give advice, but i would do something cheap.  if it was me, i would practice with my bf's undershirts which are a dime a dozen around here.

We have to dye a lot of things for work.  Certain fabrics don't take dye at all, or take it very unevenly.  I think it would be too much trouble and possible ruin the skirt.  What color were you thinking?  maybe we can find something similar?

Thanks guys. I guess I wont go for it. I was thinking of dying it light blue. I need some long, lightweight, comfy skirts for study abroad and this looked perfect except the color issue. Oh well.
