What to wear to church?
Permalink Closed

I have to go to church and I am not sure what to wear. I would like clothes that I will be able to wear in the summer. I would like them to be as casual as possible while still being appropriate.

I am not sure what is too casual. I would prefer not to wear heels or skirts. I don't know if showing your arms is acceptable and if so how much arm? How long should skirt be if I wore one? Are carpis okay? Are dressier flat sandals okay. I know showing up w/ short shorts w/ the word "cutie" written on the butt and a tube top is not okay. The last time I went to church I was 2, so I don't know what the kids are wearing these days.

Any outfit ideas? Pics would be great. Thanks ladies.

Some of it depends on the particular church.  I know at my church people show up in shorts all the time.  To be on the safe side I'd probably wear a skirt/cropped pants and a top.  Just don't wear jeans or shorts the first time and you'll probably be fine.

It is semi-casual. My boyfriends attends the church and in the summer he normally wears a polo and khakis.

haha I go to church. If it is semi-casual I would go with a skirt/pants, nice shirt and flats. You can wear a jean skirt if you want. I do it all the time.

ETA: what were you thinking of wearing? Just don't wear a mini skirt. Crop pants are fine and it is ok to wear sleeveless shirts to church. If you feel uncomfortable a short sleeve will be fine.

If it was me, I'd wear a skirt just to be on the safe side.  I'm thinking bubble skirt and nice, pretty top:

I feel like it really depends on the church and the religion, even. The first time I go to a new church, I error on the side of dressiness. I'm Catholic and moved away from home a few years ago. My church in my new city is very conservative, no open-toed sandals (even dressy ones), most women wear skirts and no one shows their arms. But when I go home to see my family, I can wear jeans with nice shoes and a fitted tee shirt. No one at the casual church will notice if you're too dressed up, but if it's a conservative church people will notice if you're dressed down.

In the church I went to, if you were a lady and was not wearing a skirt or dress people would actually look down at you.  Plus you were expected to be wearing hose.  Also men only came in suits.

I agree with the others -- it just depends. IMO it isn't even consistent within religions. At both Catholic churches I went to, people in jeans, shorts and sneakers were the norm (though my parents never let us dress that way). My grandma's Presbyterian church was a little dressier, but not much. If you can, I'd ask someone you know who already goes. If not, wear a conservative skirt, a sweater and nice flats the first time and see what everyone else is wearing.  But no one should judge you on what you're wearing -- that's missing the point IMO.
