I am not very knowledgable about tequilas because I rarely ever drink it. But a friend gave me a margherita set for a gift and it looks so yummy. It says to use premium tequila...the only one i know is Jose Cuervo but I'm really familiar with the product. Is it good? What else is good?
the least expensive premiun tequila that i like is 1800. 1800 is about $18 a bottle (i think). my favorite is patron silver. it's $40+ a bottle, and better for shots.
i used to hate tequila and think it was the devil in a bottle, but that's because the only kind i had was Jose Cuervo. if you don't like tequila, try 1800, or a nicer bottle because if it's nice quality, it's MUCH smoother.

Personally, I don't think it matters all that much when tequila's in a margarita. There are so many other flavors in there that it kind of masks a lot of the finer tequila's taste. I definitely wouldn't use really really good stuff in a margarita because of that. Some tequilas are so smooth and good that they can be sipped, like you would brandy. Good stuff. But for margaritas, I use plain ol' Cuervo. Jose and I go waaaaaaaaaaaaaay back!
I love tequila. My favorite is Two Fingers. I don't have access to very many kinds, but it is the best I have tried. It is in a black bottle. I just find Two Fingers really smooth.
ETA I do not work for Two Fingers Tequila. This post sounds like a frickin' ad.
I agree that 1800 is good, and is reasonably priced. When mixing, I tend not to use too good stuff, so 1800 or even gold jose cuervo would do. So long as you don't drinka clear tequila or El Toro, you'll be fine.
We love a good margarita (italian margarita preferably) and only use this:
Sammy Hagar Cabo Wabo
It's spendy but so smooth and none of the tequila aftertaste that you can sometimes get. If you are only using it now and then (& not for a big party) it's so worth it.
