Has anyone had a tent reception?

Hmmm, well maybe you could do areas as in a lounge area, then you could smaller tables to maybe 6 people versus 8-10 and then the tables would take up more space. You could also have a cocktail area for before the actual reception and have some high tables and that would also take up room.

Are you having a sit down dinner or buffet? If buffet, you could have sections and that would also take up some room.

Ask the location for pictures of past events and then you can see if it looked empty and see where other brides may have gone wrong.

Your situation sounds exactly like mine Uesgirl! Permanent tent for 300, only 150 guests. We're putting a couple tables at the entrance of the tent (family wedding pics, favors, signable picture mat, placecards) so that area is more like and 'entrance hall'. We're doing tables of 8, but staggering them so they're not in lines (takes up more visual space). Doing the bar area along one side of the tent. Band will be on the stage, cake in the middle of the dancefloor, and head table is going to be one looooong oblong table that borders one whole side of the dance floor.

I think you'll be fine - just kind of group the tables in the middle and if there is unused space around the edges so be it. I think it looks/feels emptier if there is too much room between them. You could also check into a rental company for some ficus trees - they'd add some interest spaced evenly around the perimeter of the tent.
