Making fun
Permalink Closed

I wasn't sure if I should bring it up, but I think I need to get it off my chest. What has been going on with the whole "Billie Sue" thing is really bothering me. It was kind of funny at first but I feel like it is getting out of hand. It seems to me that someone is getting a kick out of being snarky but staying anonymous- and that's what I hated and why I left the Lucky forum. I don't want our community to turn into that. I don't think its appropriate to make fun of someone who doesn't realize that they are being made fun of or have no recourse to respond. Making fun of someone anonymously over the internet is cowardly and weak.

I know some of us are really protective of the forum and have certain opinions about certain people not "belonging" here but I don't think that making fun of them in hopes that they will get frustrated and leave, is the right thing to do. We have to respect that registration is not restricted to those who are "cool" or whatever (you don't have to pass a fashion test to join, right?) and people may join whose posts you think are uncool/idiotic/lame whatever. Ignore those posts or even better- help those people. We are smart, cool ladies who give great advice; wouldn't it be better to guide someone rather than sneer at them?

Just my opinion. I'd love to know what everyone else thinks about what has been happening lately.

I assumed it was just a joke. It sounds like she/he is trying to be the sterotypical hick.

I don't have a hug problem w/ them being on the board as long as they don't make fun or be mean to someone else. Don't get me wrong- I am hoping she will get bored and stop posting.

I agree that they board shouldn't be restricted to only the "cool kids", but in this case I am fairly sure Billie Sue knows exactly what is going on. I don't beleive that Billie Sue is being truthful, so I am okay w/ the responses to her posts.

Edited because I didn't like my initial post:

I agree with Metric.  I'm not exactly sure who Billie Sue is or what was going on, and while I found it funny at first, I think it was taken overboard.

ditto. maybe the first few posts were serious, but I'm pretty sure sure later ones weren't.

I agree w/ you Metric.  I think most of us understand "Billie Sue's" intentions, and her intention is to be nasty.   Pretty sad.

i don't know, i see both sides of this.  i'll admit that alot of the posts had me laughing, they're just so ridiculous, and i figure that's the point.  nothing mean-hearted has been said, so i don't see the problem.  anyway, looks like "billie sue" is already done - i see nothing's been posted since yesterday, although i supposed it's still early.

on the other hand, i guess it could be construed as mean, but i think that's stretching it.

I also agree with what you said, Metric. The appearance of "Billie Sue", whoever she is, is really bothering me.

In general, I think the people here are pretty good at calling a spade a spade - because of the tone we have here it's usually pretty obvious when someone new comes along and tries to stir the pot.  It does make me uncomfortable when people are out and out mean, though.

However, I honestly wasn't sure if Billie Sue was for real or not at first.  Sometimes people who aren't used to communicating via the internet aren't the best at making themselves clear when they post, and when they ask a question that could possibly be a joke (because it's out the context of what we usually see here, etc) it's hard to gauge whether or not they're snarking or it they're just new to forum-style communication in general.

That's one of the reasons I personally like it alot when 'new' people post an introduction or something first - at least then if they posted elsewhere and their message wasn't quite clear, I know I'd be less likely to be suspicious of their intentions.

I agree with you Metric. I am confused about the situation in general, though. If Billie Sue is for real, then some of "our" (for lack of a better word) posts could have been more sensitive toward her. But if she's not, and she was making fun of others in her thread (I'm thinking of the one in Beauty & Health) then what? I don't know what's going on, which is why I've stayed out of the whole thing.

the comments were REALLY bothering me too.  just in case this person wasn't intending to be funny, i don't think some of the comments were right.

this thread:

 http://www.activeboard.com/forum.spark?forumID=44784&subForumID=102179&action=viewTopic&commentID=5930184&commentPage=0

bothered me A LOT too, and i even agreed with the statement that we end it.  i feel that this is  a welcoming community and some of the comments were out of line.  someone said the person was messing around, so i guess "billie sue" is joking, but i guess personally, until i know for a fact, i would rather those comments not be made.

or maybe i just don't have a sense of humor.

I agree with everything you said Metric.  I thought there way a way of identifying if someone is using two id's from the same IP address, but maybe I'm wrong about how you can trace that?

I find it hard to believe that someone just strolled onto this forum to target just one person(I should add I feel that they are targeting one person).

detroit- do you have any way of knowing if this is a 'regular" poster having a little fun behind a second user name?

That's what I was thinking too, but after the post in "beauty and health" it HAS to be a joke.

I also feel uncomfortable with this kind of stuff on the forum. Although I have a sense of humor, I think this is going too far. There's a line between joking/having fun and just being snarky (even if it isn't directed toward a specific person like Billie Sue's comments).

sorry, one more thing to add.  how does this look for new memebers/lurkers?  i would hate for people who are lurking or new to this forum feel like like if you are a bit "different" (for lack of a better word)...you will get made fun of.

we've had some great new members recently who have contributed a lot (me, as well as everyone else was a new memeber at one point),  if those comments were made to me, i wouldn't feel welcome.

After reading her posts, I don't think Billie Sue is making fun of anyone but herself. Here posts are oddly funny and I don't think it's a big deal. Since the only person here who can determine if she is "real" or not is Detroit, then we should probably leave it up to her to make a decision. We've had 'naughty' people come on here before and usually the norm is to ignore them and they go away. However, it is possible that Billie Sue IS real, hard as it may seem to believe (even to me).

I do know who it is and I've PM'd her.  The member was apparently just having fun. Some were able to see the humor and others weren't.  I'm just going to let it slide.  Besides, you would be surprised (as I often am) about how many regular posters there are that post under more than one member name.  'Tis the nature of the internet and forums, ladies...

I really think this may be getting taken a little to seriously...it's obvious to me  that "billie sue" is just someone's way of being silly, and she's kind of funny...I'm from a small town and she really does remind me of some of the locals...by the way, I think i've mentioned before that my mom owns a beauty shop and she does have the little old ladies that come in once a week for a shampoo and set, I think maybe it's just a southern thing? Billie Sue has really hit the redneck nail on the head...

...I'd be willing to guess that "May" is fictional as well...

that's just my opinion..:)

Someone had some "fun" with my user name a few weeks ago, and detroit was able to figure out that another name was created from my computer. Unless she just has killer instincts , there must be some way of knowing.

I don't know if I should be saying anything, but I'm going to anyway. I'm not sure if Billie Sue is joking around or being intentionally rude, but either way, it seems that certain poster/s are being made fun of. I feel badly for them... that's all.

Actually, I believe kaykay said May is her grandmother, so I don't think she's fictional.
