Marathons or Half Marathon questions
Permalink Closed

I know some of you have trained and run in one successfully. I would like to train for a half marathon to start with to raise money for our daughter we are adopting from China. It will also help pass the time and get me in shape. My husband will be doing it too. We were shooting for the JUly to august timeframe. For those of you who have done it, how long do you need to train for 13 miles? Did you have a training schedule?

The most i have ever run in my life is 7 and I have walked 10 miles about 10 times or so. The 7 mile run was 10 years ago so it doesn't count but I know i can do that much. Not at this point but with training.
Is this possible? any tips -- ideas?

Look up Jeff Galloway and Hal Higdon.  Both are very famous distance runners (they both have written books and are frequent contributors to running magazines).  One of Jeff Galloway's programs is the approved one for the Marine Corp Marathon and what I follow, so I recommend him.

In terms of time period, if you start now and think late July/August, you can do it.  Jeff Galloway recommends 17 weeks.  Here is the link to his half marathon training program:

i think time is relative.  my friend 24 yr. old friend ran the chicag marathon after doing a 4 month training program.  she was a runner before she started the program.  my dad took about a 12 months to run a half marathon.  no real training program (although he gets about every running magazine and buys about every running book).  he was also never a runner, in fact a stocky 56 yr. man.

i'm hardly going to call myself a runner, but i do read about it a lot and run a lot.

here are two websites that i like:

and i'm a memeber of CARA which is chicago area runner's association.  the CARA half marathon training program starts april 8th.  i'm not exactly sure which suburb you are, but there's a CARA running club for just about every suburb.  here's the link to the club page.

those are really great resources for me.  also, pm me if you have any questions, etc..

good luck, that's so exciting and it's really fun to have someone to run with, so good luck to your husband too.

I did my first marathon last year (hoping to do a couple more this year)

and I echo Jah's recommendations.

I trained for about 6 months... using the Jeff Galloway program and it was awesome. I didn't suffer any injuries and I finished with a pretty ok time.

feel free to PM me with any questions..

also when it's time to ask for donations for your run please PM me..I really would love to donate :)

Thanks for posting this. I am not doing a marathon but I am doing the 3-day breast cancer walk (60 miles total - yikes) in October in Penssylvania. I could use some help myself.
