I'm sooo jealous. My dad and stepmom live for half the year in PA and spend the other half in Bangkok since my stepmom's a teacher at the international school.
I don't know if you feel comfortable going down this route, but in Bangkok my stepmom buys castoffs from factories that make typical brands like Lacoste for super-cheap (like $10 US a shirt or maybe less).
oh i forgot you were moving there. a guy i was working with on a client was from there and is going back in sept. He gave me the best smelling candle his mom sent over from thailand and gave the other girl a cool straw purse from there for christmas. I dont' know where to tell you to go or if you need help with anything I can email him and see if he has suggestions. I know he is a huge shopper and probably could give you tips if you need any. He always goes over to Hong Kong for shopping also. He said they have great shopping there if you have any free time.
Thanks for the hearty welcome, everyone! To respond generally to your questions...Life is indeed good. I will totally post some pictures in the near future. We're going to this island, Ko Samet, at the end of the month which will be our first trip out of Bangkok. I bet I can get some great pics there.
It would be cool to write a column or two about life in Bangkok...it's mostly all good. Before you get too jealous, though, it's hot as hell here, and humid too. It's hot, dirty, polluted, and it's very sad to see the ridiculous number of homeless cats, dogs, and yes, elephants, wandering the streets. And the human beggars here are in extremely bad shape. I've ruled out running outdoors as there are way too many hazards.
However, the job is going well, we're starting to make friends, and the food is pretty awesome. I have not dared eat street food yet, but it smells pretty good. The restaurants are fairly cheap (although there are some $$$$$ ones to be sure) and there is quite a variety - French, Japanese, Chinese, and of course, Thai. The best surprise however is the amazing Italian food. Yum!
I plan on going to a seamstress this month to get a shift dress for work made, and possibly a suit or silk dress, depending on the prices. I will surely post pictures! I plan on bringing in photos from catalogs and mags to help explain what I want made, and then adding my own details. It'll almost be like being a real designer! V. exciting.
I can't wait to read your posts and catch up on your lives...I'm sure there have been lots of weddings, babies, job changes and new loves in your lives to catch up on.
