Tailoring pants?

When you tailor pants about how many sizes/inches down can you go? I think I Stacy and Clinton saying 2 sizes, but I am not sure.

Also has anyone found styles or materials that don't work very well? Thanks!

I went down 2 sizes last year and took some dress pants to be tailored.  I had 3 pairs of Express editors and 1 BR.  He did a fabulous job on my lined, wool, tweed pants and a kind of crappy job on the others (cotton/poly/stretch blends).  I was really suprised that the ones I thought would be the hardest to alter came out the best!   The one pair that were the largest originally came out the worst, they fit around the waist but the thighs are still way too wide so they make me look like I'm still wearing pants that are too big.
