Last night my husband and I were able to go out by ourselves while my brother and sister-in-law watched our kids. We ended up going to this place called Shadowbox Cabaret which is a like a comedy club with live music and skits. We ended up sitting in the back of the place and of course it was really loud. All of the sudden, above the sound of the music we hear this uproar outside of the club. The club is located in a huge complex that also houses movie theatres and restaurants. It was strange to hear such an uproar especially because it was so loud in the cabaret already. Then I see some of the cabaret workers start running for the door in a panic. They went and locked the doors to the place and looked extremely scared. I finally got up and asked one of the girls what was going on. She said there had been a shooting and apparently there was a riot going on outside the doors! She said the cops were there but to stay put. I went into the bathroom and called 911. They said they had already been called and I asked what exactly we should do. They said just to stay put because the cops were actively going through the building looking for the gunman! I was absolutely shaking and I went back and told my husband and the people at our table. It was so frightening because I has no idea if some gunman would storm the place and take us all hostage or what. Through all of this the show kept going on (which was probably a good thing). I went back into the bathroom and called my mom on my cell and asked her if she had heard anything on the news (she had not)-I told her to call me if she heard anything. Finally, the show ends and the doors open up (most of the people in the crowd had no idea all of this was going on). We went back into the lobby and there were police officers everywhere! You could cut the tension in the air with a knife! There were all kinds of gangs and scary-looking people loitering around and we decided to get the h*ll out there! We ended up finding out there was huge fight between some youths (gangs?) and there were conflicting reports about whether there were shots fired or not.
This all happened in a very nice, new complex right outside of Cincinnati in Newport, Kentucky. It was so scary! I won't be going back there again anytime soon after all of this.
On top of that, on our way home we got into a huge storm and they spotted tornadoes nearby! It was so ironic that my husband and I just wanted a night out to get away from the normal chaos of dealing with the kids and we end having a much more chaotic night!!!
oh! i know just where you were!!! my friend lives a block from Newport on the Levee and we go there all the time. plus, the hottie guitarist in the band at the "box" is a friend of mine too! i'll have to ask them about this!
I know what you mean about there being a lot of teens overrunning the place. i'm not sure what is going to happen there. more and more stores are going out and the demographics for what is there just isn't matching the initial vibe that they set up for NOTL.
(((((hugs)))) just be glad that you are safe and sound!!

Oh that's right-you are from Columbus right? Yes, we were at Shadowbox. It was crazy. I think it was just our table that even knew what was going on (other than a few of the girls in the show). The girl who runs the place (the one with the real short blonde hair) was the one who ran to lock the door and told me what was going on though. But honestly, after she locked the door she had to run up onstage and sing a song. I didn't feel real protected at that point! LOL!
Anyway, I WISH we had an area like Easton here. We have bits and pieces of Easton-like areas but Newport on the Levy is going downhill simply because its close proximity to downtown and all the ghetto-ness of it. It KILLS me to see my city like this!!!! It seems like everyday there is some crazy shooting or violence around downtown, Over the Rhine and Clifton (near University of Cincinnati). I live pretty far out east but still Cincinnati is my "place"-where I hung out in college, high school and hell, even grade school (my mom used to let my friend and I go downtown on our days off school by OURSELVES when we were in 7th grade-we would ride the bus and shop, go the library and even sneak into the Hyatt and use the pool)...It is so sad to see all of violence here.

Loud "Bang" Scatters Crowd At Newport On The Levee

Was it a gunshot or something else?
That's what police in Northern Kentucky are investigating after a loud noise scattered a crowd inside the Newport on the Levee complex Friday night.
A few hundred people report hearing a loud "bang" outside the movie theater ticketing office.
Some eyewitnesses say a fight broke out between teenage boys before the sound was heard.
Newport police say that so far they've found no evidence to verify that it was indeed a gunshot.
"There are conflicting reports," said Sergeant Jim Snider, of the Newport police.
"An officer on the scene thinks it may have been a gunshot, a civilian witness says it was a balloon," said Sgt. Snider, "but the one thing we are certain of it there is no physical evidence at this point."
"We were coming up from the escalator and we see everybody running past us, we kind of looked up to see what is going on," said Nick Santoro, an eyewitness. "Out of this ear I heard a shot and started running."
The complex was partially evacuated as a result of the sound.
Six people were taken into custody after they refused to leave promptly, but they are not thought to be involved with the alleged shot.
