I don't know if anyone remembers.. A while back I was pretty upset because I didn't recieve student aid. Well this fall not only I but my sister is also going to college. So that means my parent's are going to have to pay for everything. I was pretty sure since it is both of us they would give us a least something. That's not the case. My sister and I are both going to have to apply for a student loan.

Wooo, I'm going to be in debt when I graduate!!

Well, look at it this way, if you have any debt at all, student loan debt is the best kind to have and it's usually very low interest.  (Says so Suze Orman on CNBC anyway).  Watch out for the kind that penalize early payoffs, my friend (in her late thirties) had some real grievances about the loan she had.

I put myself through both undergrad and grad school with grants and loans. I owe a lot of money, but I happily pay it every month - without those loans I wouldn't have the opportunities I have today with the degrees I obtained with them.

ok, that really sucks but honestly, almost everyone I know took out loans for school. It's not that bad and it will help you build up your credit anyway. Still, no fun I know. I can also tell you that I work for a University and we don't give anyone a full ride, no matter how smart or how poor they are...we just can't afford to! And it sucks, but they manage. I'll also tell you that our policy of determining who can "afford" tuition sucks becasue it's based almost entirely on real estate which is totally unfair since it's not "real" money. I know that doesn't help, but hopefully it will at least make you feel a little better?

Can you apply for any outside scholarships to help with some of the costs? Where are the two of you going? You can pm me if yoou don't want to post here, but I might be able to help if I know anything about those schools/areas/majors.

I never even shrugged my shoulders at my student loans (they are relatively low).

I just think of it as an investment.

i agree. i think very few people graduate from school without some sort of loan. i got a generous aid package from undergrad, and it still included some loans. so while it sucks, it's not the worst thing that can happen.

I'm not too worried. I took out a student loan my first semester. I know it helps build up my credit. A friend of mine works at the financial aid department at her school and she is amazed onhow certain students qualify.

But ILoveChoo, My sister and I are going to University of Houston. She already got accepted. I have to wait till the end of my semester to get accepted since I'm transfering. My sister is planning in majoring in business and I'm planning on accounting. If you know anything please do let me know.

thanks girls, I have a new perspective too. It's an investment. haha

Aww.  I'm sorry Claudia.  Trying to figure out financial aid sucks.  For what its worth I haven't met anyone here that doesn't have a loan and they are all fine and just pay a little every month.  I use to think of it in a negative way too because my parents saved up so I wouldn't have to deal with loans because my dad did and he gets stressed about money easily but now that I've moved and seen how other people are loans really aren't a bad thing.  You will be ok especially if you are going to be an accountant.
